Question 1 (12 marks)

(a) A battery delivers 8A for 60 milliseconds when a machine is switch on. Determine the number of electrons
flow out of the battery in that period.
(b) The resistance of a circular copper wire is 40. If the diameter of the wire is 32m. What is the length of this
wire?
(c) The current flowing through a 0.3M resistor is 1.2mA. Determine the voltage across the resistor and the
power it is dissipating.

Question 2 (10 marks)

A coil of 20 resistance is connected in parallel with a coil of R ohms resistance. This combination is
then connected in series with a piece of apparatus X, and the whole circuit is connected to a 110V supply.
What must be the value of R so that apparatus X shall dissipate 600W with 10A passing through it?

Question 3 (14 marks)

Consider the following circuit:

Determine:
(a) the source current Is.
(b) the current I1 and I2.
(c) the power dissipated in the 3 and 5 resistors.
(d) the power delivered by the battery.

Question 4 (10 marks)

Consider the following circuit:

Given E = 54V, R2 = 7, and the voltages across resistors R1 and R3 are 18V and 15V, respectively.
Determine
(a) the voltage across resistor R2.
(b) the current I.
(c) the resistances of resistors R1 and R3.

Question 5 (20 marks)

Given a waveform x(t) below generated by a musical instrument.

(a) What is the period of x(t)?

(b) What is the frequency of x(t)?
(c) Signal x(t) consists of the 1st, 2nd and 4th harmonic only. Given the amplitudes of the 1st, 2nd and 4th
harmonic are 1.00, 0.75 and 0.50, respectively. Write down the mathematical representation of x(t).

(d) Sketch the frequency spectrum X(f) of the signal x(t).

(e) Sketch the frequency-domain characteristic of an ideal filter H(f) for eliminating the 4th harmonic of
X(f).

(f) Let the frequency spectrum at the filter output be Y(f). Sketch Y(f) when signal x(t) is passed through the
filter H(f).

(g) Write down the time-domain representation (i.e., y(t) ) of Y(f).

(h) Calculate the value of y(t) when t = 0.25ms (answer in 4 decimal places).

Question 6 (24 marks)

Given the following circuit:

Loop 1 Loop 2

GND = 0V

(a) By using KVL,

(i) Write the equations for Loop 1 and Loop 2 in terms of the current I1 and I2
(ii) Find I1 and I2.

(b) Based on the results in (a), find the current I3.

(c) Determine the voltage at Node A with respect to the GND (0V).

(d) The circuit can be expressed in matrix form as below,

𝑨𝒙 = 𝒚
where A is a matrix, y is a column vector, and x is the column vector defined by the two current variables
I1 and I2, i.e.,
𝐼
𝒙=
𝐼

(i) Determine the matrix A and the vector y.

(ii) Based on the matrix form, show that I1 and I2 are equal to the results in part (a)(ii) by solving for the
vector x. Show calculation steps clearly.
