Reception Curriculum Overview
AutumnTerm Overview2021
Mathematics:
We shall be focusing on counting, relating quantities to numerals, sequencing and the formation of
numbers as well as addition and subtraction. The children will be learning to sort objects according
to shapes, colour, number and size. They will become familiar with time in relation to days of the
week, months of the year. We will also focus on the use of Mathematical names for ‘solid’ 3D
shapes and flat 2-D shapes and mathematical terms to describe shapes.
Literacy:
The children will be learning to identify the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. The
children will be able to identify and write initial and final sounds in CVC (consonant vowel
consonant, e.g. bat) words. The children will recognize vowel sounds in words. We will be blending
phonetic sounds together to form words in preparation for reading and we will be looking at some
high frequency words (sight words such as ‘the’). The children will learn the correct formation of
letters as we allow plenty of opportunities to practice handwriting skills.
Children will be encouraged to maintain attention, concentrate and sit quietly during appropriate
activities. They will hopefully develop a great passion for books and we aim to develop speaking
and listening skills through our circle time, news and role-play sessions.
The children will discover who they are through a variety of activities involving themselves as
individuals and members of a community. They will be engaging in activities to develop personal
hygiene and gain an understanding of right and wrong behaviour. We will encourage self-respect
for others as they develop a sharing pattern and orderliness and the ability to express their
feelings with confidence. We will also look at our families and acknowledge the significance of the
important people in our lives. We will also be discussing about the importance of a healthy diet.
There will be lots of focus on the body as we study parts and their functions and discover a
variety of movements which we can make with various parts of the body. The children will be
learning the five senses; they will also investigate objects and materials using all these senses as
appropriate. We will also focus on our school environment and the other living thing that share the
space with us. The children will learn about animals and plants. They will also learn that not all
plants are safe to touch, smell and taste.
The children will develop a sense of realism in drawing themselves as they are made more aware of
the use of colour. They will have the opportunity to be creative and explore with a variety of
materials such as paint, crayons, collage pictures, etc. Fine motor skills will be further developed in
the form of outlining and cutting. Role-play is an essential part of creative development and this
will be encouraged on a regular basis.
Physical Development
The children will be learning to coordinate and balance their body movements. They will develop an
awareness of controlled exercise to develop and maintain good health. They will learn about
healthy eating habits and take part in discussion of their favourite fruits and food giving reasons
for their preferences. There will be a development of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
through the use of scissors, construction materials, play dough, etc.
The teachers look forward to sharing a great term with children and parents working together in
developing the children in all areas.
