 How should you read?

Reading approaches – the planned and explicit actions that help readers translate print to meaning and help improve readers'
decoding and reading comprehension skills

 Skimming - is a reading technique used to get the general idea or gist of a text without reading every word.
Purpose: The main goal of skimming is to quickly understand the main themes or concepts of the text, allowing readers to
determine if the material is relevant to their needs.

Examples:

Reading the introduction and conclusion of an article to grasp the main arguments.

Glancing through headings, subheadings, and bullet points in a report to get an overview.

Quickly reviewing a chapter in a textbook to see if it contains the desired information.

 Scanning - is a reading technique that involves quickly moving the eyes over a text to locate specific information or details
without focusing on the entire content.
Purpose: The primary objective of scanning is to find particular facts or pieces of information quickly, making it useful for
tasks that require specific details.

Examples:

Searching for a date in a historical document.

Looking for a specific term in a dictionary or glossary.

Reading through a menu to find vegetarian options.

 Intensive Reading - This approach focuses on reading short texts in detail to improve language skills.
Purpose: It aims to develop a deep understanding of the material, enhance vocabulary, and improve comprehension.

Characteristics:

Close reading of texts, often involving analysis and interpretation.

Focus on grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure.

Often used in language learning contexts, where students study texts thoroughly.

May include activities such as answering questions, summarizing, or discussing the text.

 Extensive Reading - This approach involves reading larger quantities of material for enjoyment and general understanding.
Purpose: It aims to increase fluency and overall reading comprehension by exposing readers to a wide range of texts.

Characteristics:

Reading longer texts such as novels, articles, or stories without focusing on every detail.

Encourages reading for pleasure and developing a love for reading.

Helps improve speed and comprehension through exposure to different writing styles and vocabulary.

Often done independently, allowing readers to choose their materials based on interest.

 Further Reading Tips

Vary Your Reading Rate: Adjust your reading speed based on the purpose of your reading. For example, slow down for complex texts
and speed up for familiar or easier material.

Look Out for Pivotal Words: Pay attention to keywords, phrases, and transitional words that signal important information or shifts in
ideas. Words like "however," "therefore," and "for example" can guide your understanding of the text’s structure.

Read Voraciously: Cultivate a habit of reading widely across different genres and topics. This will not only enhance your reading
skills but also broaden your knowledge and vocabulary.
