Course Frame Work


Credits: L-T-P: 3 – 0 – 1 Total Credits: 4
Contact Hours/Week: 5 Direct Teaching Hours: 45 Total Contact Hours: 75
Course Learning Objectives: This course will enable the students to
• Gain the knowledge of newer concepts in modern Physics for better appreciation
of modern technology.
• Learn the basic concepts of Physics which are essential to solve practical
engineering problems.
• Analyze the principles of Physics to apply its solutions effectively and
meaningfully.
• Signify the application of sensitive instrumentation.
• Identify the different types of crystal structures.

Syllabus Hours
Module-1 09
Quantum Mechanics: Introduction to quantum physics, Black body radiation, Stefan’s
law, Wein’s law, Rayleigh’s law, Planck’s law, Photoelectric effect, Compton effect, de-
Broglie’s hypothesis, Wave-particle duality, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, Non-
existence of electron inside the nucleus. Schrodinger’s time independent wave
equation, Particle in one dimensional box.

Module – 2 09
Semiconductor Physics: Intrinsic and Extrinsic semiconductors, Dependence of Fermi
level on carrier-concentration and temperature, Carrier generation and recombination.
Hall effect, p-n junction diode, Zener diode and their V-I Characteristics. Dielectrics:
Polarization, types of polarization and Dielectric constant, types of dielectrics, Internal
fields in a solid, Clausius-Mossotti equation, applications.

Module – 3 09
Optoelectronics: Radiative and non-radiative recombination mechanisms in
semiconductors. LED and semiconductor lasers: Device structure, Materials,
Characteristics and figures of merit. Photodetectors: Solar cell, PIN and Avalanche and
their structure, Materials, working principle and Characteristics.

Lasers and Fibre Optics: Introduction to interaction of radiation with matter, Principle
and working of Laser, Population inversion, pumping. Types of Lasers: Carbon dioxide
(CO2) laser, semiconductor laser, Applications of laser. Fibre Optics: Introduction,
Optical fibre as a dielectric wave guide, Total internal reflection, Acceptance angle,
Numerical aperture, Modes and V-number, Step and Graded index fibres, Losses
associated with optical fibres, Applications of optical fibres.

Module-5 09
Crystal structures: Crystal Structure Space lattice, Bravais lattice–Unit cell, primitive
cell. Lattice parameters. Crystal systems. Miller indices. Expression for inter – planar
spacing. Co-ordination number. Atomic packing factors (SC, FCC, BCC). Bragg’s law,
Determination of crystal structure using Bragg’s X–ray diffractometer.
