MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERNWORLD

3 topics and construct your own problem:

1 for Age Word Problem
1 for Mixture Problem
1 for Distance, Rate and Time Problem

 AGE WORD PROBLEMS

Brill is 15 years older than John. In 9 years, he will twice as old as John.
How old are they now?

Brill John
Present X+15 X

Future X+15+9 X+9

Let's solve it: Let John's current age be x. Brill's current age is x + 15 (since Brill is

15 years older). In 9 years: John's age = x + 9 Brill's age = x + 15 + 9 = x + 24

According to the problem, in 9 years, Brill will be twice as old as John: x + 24 = 2(x

+ 9) Simplify the equation: x + 24 = 2x + 18 24 = x + 18 x = 6 So, John's current

age is 6 years. Now, find Brill's current age: Brill's current age = x + 15 = 6 + 15 =

21 Therefore, John is currently 6 years old, and Brill is currently 21 years old. Check:

In 9 years: John's age = 6 + 9 = 15 Brill's age = 21 + 9 = 30 Indeed, 30 = 2 × 15.

Answer: John: 6 years old Brill: 21 years old.

 MIXTURE PROBLEM

You have a 10 liters of a 30% alcohol solution. How many liters of pure
alcohol must be added to make 70% alcohol solution?
Let's solve this step by step: Initial solution: - Volume: 10 liters - Alcohol

percentage: 30% - Alcohol content: 10 liters * 0.3 = 3 liters (pure alcohol)

Final solution (desired): - Volume: 10 + x liters (x is the pure alcohol to be

added) - Alcohol percentage: 70% - Alcohol content: 0.7(10 + x) liters Since

the pure alcohol added (x) will contribute to the total alcohol content: 3 liters

(initial) + x liters (added) = 0.7(10 + x) Simplify the equation: 3 + x = 7 +

0.7x 0.3x = 4 x = 4/0.3 x = 13.33 liters So, approximately 13.33 liters of

pure alcohol must be added. Resulting solution: - Volume: 10 + 13.33 =

23.33 liters - Alcohol percentage: 70% (as desired).

 DISTANCE, RATE AND TIME PROBLEM

The two jogger start from the opposite ends of 20km course towards each other. One jogger
run at a rate 8km/h, and the other jogger run at rate of 10km/h. After how long will be the
bikers meet?
To solve this problem, we can use the concept of relative speed. Since the two joggers are
moving towards each other, their relative speed is the sum of their individual speeds.

Speed of the first jogger = 8 km/h

Speed of the second jogger = 10 km/h
Their combined speed (relative speed) is:

8km/h+10km/h=18km/h
8km/h+10km/h=18km/h
Now, the total distance between them is 20 km. To find the time it takes for them to meet, we
use the formula:

Time=Distance Relative Speed

Time= Relative Speed Distance
Substitute the values:
Time=20km18 km/h=109 hours
Time= 18km/h 20km= 910 hours

So, the time it takes for the two joggers to meet is:
109hours ≈ 1.11 hours
910 hours≈1.11hours
This is approximately 1 hour and 7 minutes.

1. How did you formulate your own problem from the 3 topics
mentioned?
> First read carefully analyzing each problems and classifying it, whether it concern about
age, mixture problem, or distance rate and time. Then i describe the variables and stablish
relationship among them, and develop an equation.

2. How you determine that did your own constructed problem is

aligned in the 3 topics mentioned?
> I formulated my own problem from the 3 topics in age problems. I focus on relationship
between their ages at different points in time involving the equations.

3. What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered

upon constructing the problem?

> It's really challenging, especially to me doesn't like numbers.

4. How did you arrive at your answer

> I arrive my answer by following all examples and apply it into my work. And i ensure if my

answer is correct or incorrect.

5. Enumerate the steps you follow upon answering your

constructed problems?

> First of all read carefully and watching the instructional videos and identify key information.

Second verify the units of measurement and ensure calculation are correct.
