Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding your education loan. Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA)
offers Modified Payment Terms that will temporarily reduce monthly payments for borrowers who qualify.
After reviewing your option(s), if you wish to apply for the MEFA Modified Payment Term (MPT), then complete and return
this MPT application with all required documentation within 10 days to American Education Services (AES) using any
of the return methods listed below. Please don't hesitate to call us for assistance with completing the application; we are
here to help!
The MPT Application will need to include all of the following in order to be processed:
Document(s) to verify income (Section 1)
List of expenses (Section 1)
Repayment option choice - please be sure to ONLY write the name of the MPT plan you are selecting in Section 2
of the MPT application
Signature of requesting party
Completed Direct Debit Application required, if not currently enrolled
You can also enroll in Direct Debit by logging into your online account at aesSuccess.org under the Payments
and Billing section.
To qualify for an MPT, you must demonstrate financial hardship. Upon receipt of your completed MPT application, AES
will review your MPT application and determine if you qualify.
If you do not qualify, you will receive a denial letter outlining why your MPT application was denied.
If you qualify, your account will be placed on the eligible MPT plan that you have been approved for. In addition,
you will receive an approval letter and separately, you will receive a letter with information regarding your repayment
terms.
Continue to pay your current monthly installment amount on your account(s). If your account becomes past due,
your debt may be reported as delinquent to the credit reporting agencies. Your Modified Payment Term will only begin after
you have received confirmation of approval for MPT from AES. If your MPT application is approved and your account is
delinquent, an administrative forbearance will be applied to bring your account current.
Return the completed application and requested documentation. You can upload your completed application
and supporting documents directly to AES using our File Upload Feature. Simply log in to your online account at

How the Modified Payment Term Affects your Loan

MPT is a great option for borrowers experiencing financial hardship, but there are some important factors to consider
before applying. Please review the information below to make an informed decision regarding your student loan(s).

MPT Fast Facts

MPT offers temporary relief for financial hardship.

Upon completion of your MPT, your loan(s) will be re-amortized and your monthly payment amount will increase to
satisfy your original repayment terms.
The longer an account is on a modified plan, the more the monthly payment amount may increase.

What does it mean when your loan is re-amortized?

When a loan is re-amortized, the fixed monthly payment is recalculated to ensure the loan will be repaid within the
remaining loan term.

American Education Services (AES) to apply forbearance to any designated loans that are delinquent at the time of
processing. By signing this application I am acknowledging that I understand AES will capitalize (add to my principal
balance) any unpaid interest accrued through the end of this forbearance period.

I understand that if I qualify for MPT, but billing is suspended due to a bankruptcy filing (for any borrower on the loan(s)), I
may forfeit the months remaining on my MPT plan.
