(b) The cost of water consists of two parts. There is a fixed charge of K15, 000 for the

7 The school Farmers Club was given a small piece of land to grow some vegetables. The
piece of land was in a triangular form as shown below. AB = 6m, AC = 8m and

8 (a) A ship leaves a port R and sails for 5km on a bearing of 240° to port S.

(c) The point X inside the triangle is such that:- AX ≥ 4cm
- AX ≤ BX
- It is nearer to AB than it is to AC.
(d) Shade the possible region where X must lie. [3]

10 (a) Last year, Mambwe’s monthly salary was K1, 400,000. At the beginning of this year
he was given a salary increment of 25%. Calculate his new salary. [2]

(b)Given that f(x) = 5 – 2x, find

(i) f(4) [2]

(iii) fˉ¹(-3) [2]

(c) P, Q, R and S are points on a circle. PR and QS cross at X.

(b) (i) Given that the area of ABC is 85cm², form an equation in x and show that it

12 (a) Solve the simultaneous equations 2y = x


5x – 7y = 9 [3]
(b)A hall contains 175 people. If 12% of them are children and there are 56 men, how
many women are in the hall? [3]

(c) Mwiinga travelled from Pemba to Lusaka by train. The train left Pemba at 21:56hrs
and reached Lusaka at 05:08hrs the following day. The distance from Pemba to
Lusaka is 270km.
Calculate
(i) the time taken for the journey [2]
(ii) the average speed of the journey in km/h [2]
(d) Given that P = 2(l + b), find the value of P when l = 8cm and b = 3cm [2]

13. Answer the whole of this question on a sheet of graph paper.

The variables x and y are connected by the equation y = 2x² - x – 3.


Some corresponding values of x and y correct to 1 decimal place where necessary are
given in the table.

(a) Calculate the value of p giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place. [1]

(b) Using a scale of 2cm to 1 unit on the x – axis, and 2cm to 2 units on the y – axis,
draw a horizontal x - axis for -2  x  4 and a vertical y – axis for – 4  y  12. On your
axes, draw the graph of y = 2x² – x – 3 [3]

(c) By showing the method, use the graph to solve the equation 2x² – x – 3 = 6 [2]

(d) By drawing a tangent, find the gradient of the curve at the point (1, -2) [2]

(e) On the same axes, draw the graph of the straight line y = x + 2. [2]

(f) Using your graph, find the value of x in the range –2  x  4 for which
2x² – x – 3 = x + 2 [2]
