GRADE LEVEL: 11 WEEK:

5
SUBJECT: Empowerment Technology- Information and Communication Technology
LESSON: 1
TOPIC: APPLIED PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS: Advanced Spreadsheet Skills
OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Familiarize with the most commonly used functions in Microsoft Excel;
2. Use several conditional functions available in Microsoft Excel; and
3. Use Microsoft Excel as a viable tool in market research and product development.

LESSON PROPER:
EXCEL
 One of the applications created by Microsoft, used to simulate a paper worksheet. It is
composed of cells that are represented in rows and column designated to perform
basic arithmetic operations. It is widely used in accounting and financial, as well as
statistics and engineering calculations.
 Uses Formulas to calculate values.
 The equal sign typed in the cell signifies that a formula is created or the Auto Sum
function is used to build a formula.
 An Excel formula always begins with an equal ( = ) sign

FORMULAS AND FUNCTIONS

ADDITION + (plus sign) Ex. =A2+B2
SUBTRACTION – (minus sign) Ex. =A2-B2 (changes the sign of the value
in A2)
EXPONENTIATION ^ (caret) Ex. =A2^3 (raises the number in A2 to the
power of 3)
DIVISION / (forward slash) Ex. =A2/B2
MULTIPLICATION * (asterisk) Ex. =A2*B2
PERCENTAGE % (percent sign) Ex. A2*10% (returns 10% of value in A2)
**type <=> before the formula, thus: =a1+a2 <then, hit the ENTER key>

REFERENCE OPERATORS
COLON (:) Ex. Range A1:A100 includes 100 cells from
It is a RANGE operator that allows you to A1 through A100. To find an AVERAGE of
make one reference for multiple cells those 100 cells,
located between 2 cells that you specify. =AVERAGE(A1:A100)

COMMA (,) Ex. =IF(A1>0, “good”, “bad”) read as:

Used to separate arguments in excel if A1 is greater than zero, return
spreadsheet formulas. “good”, otherwise “bad”
SPACE( ) Ex. =B3:D3 C2:C4
It is an intersection operator that lets you
get the cell(s) common to the two
references that you specify.

KEY TERMS IN MS EXCEL

ACTIVE CELL - the selected cell
COLUMN HEADING - the box at the top containing a letter
ROW HEADING - the row number
CELL REFERENCE - the cell address of the cell usually combine letter and
number (ex. A1, B4, C2)
MERGE - combining or joining two or more cells
FORMULA - is an expression which calculates the value of a cell.
FUNCTIONS - are predefined formulas and are already available in excel
FORMULA BAR - the bar that displays the contents of a cell

COMMON EXCEL FUNCTIONS

=SUM - Calculates the sum of the values of a range of cells
=AVERAGE - Calculates the arithmetic mean of a range of cells
=MAX - Gives the maximum value in a range of cells
=MIN - Gives the minimum value in a range of cells
=COUNT - Counts the number of cells in a range of cells
