BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Writing an Exposition
Hello there! It’s me again, teacher Richard. You will be learning
more about how to write an exposition or discussion on a familiar issue
including the key structural elements and language features. Also, you will
be dealing with different situations wherein these skills will be applied. But
before anything else, let us define what exposition is.

According to the definition from Oxford languages, exposition is a

comprehensive description and explanation of an idea or theory.

But how do we write an exposition? What are the structural elements and language
features that you need to learn to compose an exposition?

What is an expository essay?

An expository essay is a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate
and explain an idea, evaluate evidence, and describe an argument about that idea in a
brief and clear way. This can be achieved through comparison and contrast, definition,
example, and analysis of cause and effect, etc.

Features of Expository Writing

The main features include:
• Informative. Expository text is intended to deposit information.
• Clarity. Using words that clearly show what the writer is talking about.
• Organization of the text. A well-written exposition remains focused on its topic
and lists events in chronological order
• Impersonal. Second-person instructions with "you”. However, the use of first-
person pronouns should be avoided.
• Unbiased. Expository essays will not clearly reveal the opinion of the writer.

Structural Elements
For you to have a good structure in expository writing, let’s have burger. Yes, we are
going to use the Hamburger Essay structure. This simple structure encourages you to
think of your expository essay as a hamburger consisting of the following:

Introduction

Body

Conclusion

The top bun of the burger is the introductory part that introduces the topic of the
exposition. This is usually the general statement on the subject, providing an overview of
what the essay is about. Use your opening sentence to get the attention of your reader,
and then follow up with a few sentences that give your reader some background for the
information you are going to discuss.

3
If the introduction is the top bun of the burger, then each body paragraph is a beef
patty. The patty and vegetables in the burger form an essential part of the whole. In the
body of your expository essay, include three to five paragraphs. The body could be longer,
depends on the topic. Then, each paragraph contains several sentences that expand on
the information and/or support the topic sentence.
The bottom bun of the hamburger essay is the conclusion. It is the summary of
the information through restating the main ideas in a unique way. Do not introduce any
new information into the conclusion; rather, summarize and conclude regarding the
information presented in the body of the essay. The purpose is not just to summarize your
argument but to use it as a way of recommending further action, offering a solution, or
posing new questions to discover.
