Acceleration Lab
Acceleration Lab
Objective :
1. To determine and study the relationship between position, velocity and
acceleration.
MATERIALS :
1. Inclined plane
2. Car
3. Photogates
BACKGROUND
To understand the motion of an object completely,
acceleration should be found. Acceleration is defined as
the rate at which the velocity of a moving object changes.
Acceleration is calculated by dividing the change in
velocity by the total time. It can be also found by plotting
the speed-time graph; the slope of this graph indicates
the acceleration.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
1. Set the inclined plane and photogates.
2. Fix the first photogate at a point A known as reference point.
3. Fix now the photogate B and measure the distance between A and B.
4. Measure the interval time between A and B as the car passes.
5. Switch on the photogate B alone and find the time at B.
6. Change the position of B by increasing the distance between A and B.
Repeat your measurements 6 times.
7. Record the data in the table below and calculate the distance in meter and
the instantaneous velocity at B in each trial (width of wing=5cm)
10. Find the time at A. TA=…………………….
11. Calculate the velocity at A. VA=…………………….
QUESTIONS
1. When you plot the time versus velocity, did you obtain a
straight line or a curve?

2. What can you conclude about the acceleration?

3. Calculate the acceleration of the car using the formula:
Acceleration = (velocity at B – velocity at A) divided by the time
interval (You can use the time interval and the velocity at B from
any of the table1 trials)

4. Find the slope of the graph and compare it with the value
measured for acceleration. What can you conclude
