CLASS: 6th SUBJECT: General Science Unit.1: Science and Technology
.

A. Answer these questions:

1. Explain the words "science" and "technology".
Ans: Science is a process of acquiring knowledge about living and non-living things.
Technology deals with using scientific principles to develop things that can do a useful job.

2. How is the work of a scientist different from that of a technologist?

Ans: Scientists make new discoveries whereas, Technologists work to make use of these discoveries to develop
useful things.

3. Define a scientific method. Briefly describe different steps involved in scientific method.
Ans: The step-by-step process of study and learning is called scientific method.

STEPS INVOLVED IN SCIENTIFIC METHOD

1. Identification of the problem 5. Experimentation
2. Make observation 6. Formation of theory
3. Collection of information 7. Formation of scientific law or principle
4. Formation of hypothesis 8. Application of Law
Explanation on Book page # 3

4. What methods are usually adopted to gather information about a problem?

Ans: Scientist obtain facts and ideas about the problem from books, journals, and other scientists. Personal
observations are also made to collect more information about the problem.

5. A theory accepted today can be rejected in future. Explain how this can happen.
Ans: As better scientific tools and instruments become available, more and more observations can be made. It
may then be found that theory does not support the new observations.

6. Is science good or bad for us? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans: Science is neither good nor bad- it is a tool that can be used to benefit or harm us. Good use of science can
benefit us whereas wrong or evil use of science is harmful.

7. How can you differentiate limitations and harms of science. List down some limitations of
science.
Ans: The shortcomings and weaknesses are considered as limitations of science, but the wrong or evil use of
science is considered as harms of science.
LIMITATIONS OF SCIENCE
1. It can only inform us about natural disaster but cannot stop them.
2.It is still unable to explain the supernatural.
3. It is still unable to defeat death.
