in chemistry, with a focus on the sustainability and optimization of food and bio-based processes. My
undergraduate training in Chemical & Food Process Engineering at the Rajshahi University of Engineering
& Technology (RUET) laid the groundwork for my proficiency in analytical chemistry and food
engineering. My master's program in Quality in Analytical Laboratories (EMQAL) at the University of
Barcelona and the University of Algarve has further honed my analytical skills, enabling me to work with
advanced techniques such as HPLC-MS and UV-Vis spectroscopy. My career objective is to contribute to
sustainable advancements in bio-based materials and chemical processes, aligning closely with the
evolving needs of environmental and food industries.
My research experience spans several impactful projects. At RUET, I contributed to studies on drying
kinetics of mango pulp and on valorizing green mango peel and pulp, which enhanced my understanding
of bioprocessing and material behavior under varying conditions. As a Research Master’s student at the
University of Barcelona, my work on valorizing cocoa by-products through the extraction of bioactive
compounds has allowed me to explore the potential of natural products in food and material sciences.
Additionally, as an intern at the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), I gained
hands-on experience with instrumental techniques critical to food and environmental chemistry,
including GC and HPLC-MS.
My research interests are deeply rooted in biopolymers, sustainable chemical processes, and the
valorization of agricultural and industrial by-products. Specifically, I am motivated to explore sustainable
biopolymers for packaging applications, bioactive compound extraction, and bio-waste processing for
circular economy applications. The interdisciplinary nature of chemistry drives my passion for integrating
chemistry with biology and environmental science, which aligns with my interest in bio-based materials.
For my graduate studies, I am especially interested in pursuing research under faculty at the University of
Barcelona who focus on sustainable chemistry and bio-based materials. I am drawn to Prof. Dr. Javier
Vicente Saurina Purroy and Prof. Dr. Sonia Sentellas Minguillon’s work in analytical techniques and
bioactive compound characterization, which resonates with my current project on cocoa by-products.
Their approach of linking fundamental chemistry with real-world applications aligns with my aspiration
to make impactful contributions to sustainable materials and bio-based solutions.
In conclusion, my academic preparation, hands-on research experience, and professional goals have
prepared me for advanced studies in chemistry. I am excited to delve deeper into interdisciplinary
research that contributes to the sustainable advancement of biopolymers and bio-waste valorization,
ultimately aiming to drive innovation for a greener future.
Building from an academic and research background in chemistry, I have a strongly founded core interest
in the areas of sustainability and optimization of food and bio-based processes. Undergraduate training
at RUET in Chemical & Food Process Engineering provided the foundation for my proficiency in analytical
chemistry and food engineering. The master's program in EMQAL at the University of Barcelona and the
University of Algarve has therefore given more fine-tuning to my analyses, proficiently working with
advanced techniques like HPLC-MS and UV-Vis spectroscopy. My career objective is to make a
contribution to the sustainable development of bio-based materials and chemical processes which are in
great need for evolutions within environmental and food industries.
My research exposure consists of a couple of impactful projects. These studies at RUET included drying
kinetics of mango pulp and valorization of green mango peel and pulp, which helped me in developing a
better understanding of bioprocessing and material behavior under various conditions. Valorizing cocoa
by-products through the extraction of bioactive compounds during my studies as a Research Master's
student at the University of Barcelona gave me the opportunity to explore the potentiality of natural
products in the fields of food and material sciences. Besides that, I had the chance to work with some
critical instrumental techniques for food and environmental chemistry, such as GC and HPLC-MS, during
my internship at Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
The domain of my interest in research covers biopolymers, sustainable chemical processes, and the
valorization of agricultural or industrial by-products. More precisely, these three reasons constitute my
motivation: the development of sustainable biopolymers for packaging applications, the extraction of
bioactive compounds, and the processing of bio-waste for applications related to the circular economy.
Interdisciplinary chemistry inflames my zeal in integrating chemical science with biology and
environmental science, overlying with an interest in bio-based materials.
This has brought me to take a particular interest in the research being pursued by the faculty at the
University of Barcelona on sustainable chemistry and bio-based materials. Relating most to this, I am
interested in the work of Prof. Dr. Javier Vicente Saurina Purroy and Prof. Dr. Sonia Sentellas Minguillon,
who develop and characterize the active principles using analytical techniques in their research-an area
that I find rather related to my current project on cocoa by-products. Their way of connecting the basic
chemistry with industrial applications is something quite parallel to my ambition of making relevant
contributions toward the development of sustainable materials and bio-based solutions.
In the light of the aforementioned, my academic preparation combined with research experience and
professional goals qualifies me for advanced studies in chemistry. I particularly look forward with
enthusiasm to the opportunity for further study in interdisciplinary research that contributes to the
sustainable development of biopolymers and bio-waste valorization-to the ultimate drive for innovation
toward a greener future.
Since childhood, I have never liked waste of any kind. Growing up in Bangladesh-an agriculture-based
country-I saw my grandfather and uncles work so hard to grow crops and vegetables. Yet, due to natural
disasters or inadequate storage facilities, much of their harvests were lost. This experience instilled in me
a deep sense of responsibility and, therefore, a personal mission to reduce waste, as well as find ways of
converting it into value-added products.
Motivated by this goal, I worked hard to secure admission to one of the top universities in Bangladesh,
where I pursued a degree in Chemical and Food Process Engineering. The field equipped me with the
knowledge and skills to make meaningful steps toward achieving that dream. Even though my academic
journey had begun on shaky grounds, with a poor GPA, I never lost hope. I worked harder and was able
to obtain a 3.77/4.00 GPA in the last four semesters of my undergraduate degree. I also ranked in the top
five in my department and obtained the maximum grade for my undergraduate thesis.
With the passion for valorization of wastes, I got a golden opportunity to work as a research assistant
under the guidance of Dr. Mohammad Nurur Rahman. I contributed to multiple projects regarding food
waste to value-added product conversion and, hence, further strengthened my urge to work on
developing sustainable solutions. Thanks to the latter, my goal of strengthening my knowledge in waste
valorization and obtaining higher education in analytical techniques, I got a prestigious Erasmus Mundus
Scholarship that allowed me to enroll in the Master's Degree in Quality in Analytical Laboratories in two
prestigious European universities.
Presently, I am executing my master's thesis about the valorization of cocoa by-products using advanced
analytical techniques under the supervision of Dr. Javier Saurina and Dr. Sonia Santellas. In my first year
at the University of Algarve, I attained sound theoretical knowledge in respect to the analytical
techniques, quality management in laboratories, and data analysis. I also acquired skills in
methodologies of advanced data analysis, such as PCA and PLS-DA, and experimental design that I apply
in my master's research.
Said this, I would like to further my horizon toward a PhD with a biomass utilization emphasis. The
contribution of my efforts toward the quest for global sustainability, active solutions for waste reduction,
and value creation from biomass will be my focal points. I have particular interest in deep eutectic
solvent-assisted biomass fractionation and lignin chemistry research, for which I feel immense scope
exists. With a background in Chemical and Food Process Engineering, experience with analytical
chemistry, and passion for waste reduction, I strongly feel this is a job fit for me.
Thank you for considering my application. I will be glad to have an opportunity to contribute towards
your research and discuss, in detail, the alignment of my background with your goals.
