FRENCH WING
Cultural Conundrum (Compulsory Category)

Participant Limit: 2-4 participants per team

The "Cultural Conundrum " is an exciting and educational category within our
event where delegates have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in
the vibrant cultures of the Francophone world.
In this category, participants are assigned a specific Francophone country, and
their challenge is to set up an engaging and informative stall that showcases the
essence and uniqueness of that nation. Delegates are encouraged to unleash their
creativity and resourcefulness as they transform their assigned spaces into
captivating windows into their chosen country's heritage. From colorful displays
of traditional crafts and artifacts to tantalizing tastes of authentic cuisine, each
pavilion is a mini cultural journey.

Rules and Guidelines:


1. Delegates must choose a country from the list provided below and
mention their selection clearly a week prior to the event via email
([email protected])
2. In case another participating school has already chosen that country,
delegates would be required to change their choice of country (first-
come-first-served basis)
3. Delegates will have to bring all of their own materials to set up the stall.
Posters, cardboards, printouts, crafts and decorative material and even
small edibles can be brought (in case of eatables, please inform in
advance)
4. The stall itself will be a table provided by us

‘Saviez-vous?’ Quiz (Compulsory Category)

Participant Limit: 3 participants per team

Rules/Guidelines:

● No cell phones/devices with internet connections. All devices must be


submitted to Category Heads/Assistant Category Heads before the round starts.

● No guiding material i.e. books, dictionaries, written material is allowed.

This category provides a unique opportunity to test one's knowledge of the


various facets of the Francophone world. It will focus on testing the delegates
knowledge in various areas of French culture, language, history and literature.

This category will feature two rounds

Round 1:

● This round will be a direct elimination buzzer round.

● Two teams will be pitted against each other with a buzzer given to each team.

● Questions will be displayed on a projector screen in front of both teams and will
be controlled by the Event Head(s).

● A total of eight (8) questions will be shown to both teams and the team to ring
their buzzer first will get a window of ten (10) seconds to answer the question in
front of them; if they fail, the question shall be discarded, with no one getting any
points.

● The team to get the correct answer gets one point towards their score
Round 2:

This round will be based on a buzzer-oral quiz format.

● All teams will be subject to answering ten questions with fifteen seconds to
answer each question.
● Each team will have a total of four minutes and fifteen seconds to answer their
questions.
● If any team yields a question, the other teams in the room can ring their buzzer
for a chance to answer that question for extra points.
● There will be no negative marking but yielded answers will be up-marked.
● The team with the most questions answered correctly will win the category

‘Discours d’une âme’ Monologue

Participant Limit: 1 participant only per team

Any man can speak, but only a few can orate. This is the main idea behind the
French monologue category this year at ACLLF. Delegates will be required to
prepare a 3 - 5-minute monologue from any play or literary material of their
choice.
Using the skills of narration and expression they will have to present a monologue
performance. Delegates' ability to use their diction to portray the monologue and
their understanding of the monologue will be judged.

Rules and Regulations:


1. Delegates are expected to submit a transcript of their monologues to the event
heads 3 days before the event on the following email address:

2. Delegates are expected to follow the time limit of 3 - 5 minutes.
3. The usage of racial slurs, inappropriate language, bigoted language or
any sort of violation of the equity policy shall be subjected to
disqualification from the category.
4. Delegates will be judged on the basis of:
a. Content /10
b. Style /10
c. Understanding /10
d. Body Language /10
e. Delivery & Enunciation /10
‘Sortez vos plumes!’ (Creative Writing)

Participant Limit: 2 participants per team

Writing is an art. To twist words and to give them flavour as well as meaning, is
the true success of an artist of the languages. And this is what we will put to the
test.
This year, the creative writing category will put delegates front and center to
devise a story or piece of writing based on 10 random words. A list of 30 words
are included hereunder, from which 10 words would be announced at the
commencement of the category. The allocated words would need to be used in a
piece of writing 200 - 250 words long. Delegates would be judged on the basis of
how creative and ingenuitive their storyline is, the use of the 10 words and
understanding of their meaning in the sentences. Their command over French
language along with writing skills will be tested.

Rules and Guidelines:


1. Both team members are required to collaborate on one piece of writing.
2. Use of phones or dictionaries is not allowed.
3. All stationary will be provided by the Event Heads.
4. Word limit: 200-250 words.
5. A total time of 45 minutes shall be given for planning and writing.
6. All essays shall be judged out of 40 marks

French Short Film

Participant Limit: 2-5 participants per team

In this category delegates have to unleash their creativity, storytelling prowess,


and cinematic talents. In this category, delegates are tasked with the exciting
challenge of conceptualizing, producing, and presenting a captivating short film
that explores the beauty, diversity, and richness of the French language and
culture.

Rules and Guidelines:


1. Participants can prepare their short film on any one of the topics below:
 Au Café
 Au Restaurant
 A l’école/ Dans la classe
 Au Supermarché
2. The film will be prepared before the event and the submission deadline
for the film will be 2 days prior to the event i.e. latest by 2nd November
2023.
3. The film must be completely and solely in French. Background music,
props and characters in background can be used.
4. Please give an appropriate title to your film.
5. All films will be submitted via email to
[email protected]. Delegates are further
instructed to bring a copy of their film on USB drive. The film will be
screened on a screen with a USB port attachment.
6. The duration of the film should be 3-5 minutes.
7. The films will be judged on the following criteria:
 Creativity /10
 Depiction of French language and culture /10
 Structure and Plot /10
 Entertainment and Originality /10
 Quality /10

Poetry Recitation
Participant Requirement: 1 participant only per team

Delegates will demonstrate how French poetry focuses on the expression of


feelings and ideas and is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm.
Delegates will have to maneuver undertones as well as subtle pauses to get their
point across.

Rules and Regulations:


1. Delegates are expected to submit a copy of their selected poem to the
event heads 2 days prior to the event. Poems can be emailed to the
following email address: [email protected]
2. Delegates should refrain from using translations of any religious literature
along with translations of famous poetry in another language; only poetry
originally in French should be recited.
3. Delegates will be judged on the following basis:
 Pronunciation /10
 Expression /10
 Tonal Variation /10
 Understanding /10
 Body Language /10

Spelling Bee
Participant Requirement: 1 participant only per team.

Delegates will be required to spell a selection of words, ranging in difficulty.


The word list of 250 words is included hereunder. Delegates will be required to
memorise the words. Delegates will draw out 5 words present in the provided list.
The word will then be read out, and announced three times. There will be a time
limit of 25 seconds for a delegate to spell each word. Each word spelt correctly
will be awarded with one point. The category will consist of two rounds. Both
rounds will operate in the same way, however round one will be an elimination
round. The top five from round one will go on to round two. 125 of the words
from the original pool, not used in round 1, will be used in round 2.

Rules and Regulations:


1. Delegates are not allowed any helping materials.
2. Delegates will need to spell out the words in French alphabets.
Delegates will be required to include names of accents when spelling.
3. Each delegate will be required to attempt to spell the words they are
given.
4. There is 1 Point for every correct word and no negative marking for any
incorrect word.
