ME-332 Assignment Set1
1. The wall of a boiler is made up of 250 mm of the brick (conductivity = 1.05 W/m K), 120 mm of
insulation brick (conductivity = 0.15 W/m K) and 200 mm of red brick (conductivity = 0.85 W/m K).
The inner and outer surface temperatures of the wall are 850 oC and 65 oC, respectively. Calculate the
temperatures at the contact surfaces and heat transfer per unit area.
2. Consider 1D a conduction
through composite block
shown in figure and assume
same dimension for B and D.
Calculate the heat transfer
rate.
3. For a 10 m long composite pipe, inner diameter is 25 cm, inner is 5 cm thick (k = 0.095 W/m K)
and outer layer is 4 cm thick (k = 0.065 W/m K). The inner and outer surface temperatures as
measured are 400 oC and 50 oC, respectively. Determine the radial heat transfer rate and the
temperature between the two layers.
4. The temperature on the two surfaces of a 1000 mm thick steel plate, (k = 50 W/m K) having a
uniform volumetric heat generation of 20 kW/m3, are 300 oC and 200 oC. Determine the following:
i) the temperature distribution across the plate ii) the value and position of the maximum temperature,
and iii) the flow of heat from each surface of the plate.
5. A 3 mm diameter wire (k = 20 W/m K, resistivity = 10×10-8 Ω m) 100 m long has a voltage of 100
V impressed on it. The outer surface of the wire is maintained at 100 oC. Calculate the centre
temperature of the wire. If the heated wire is submerged in a fluid maintained at 50 oC, find the heat
transfer coefficient on the surface of the wire.
6. A steel ball (density = 7800 kg/m3, specific heat capacity = 460 J/kgK and thermal conductivity =
35 W/mK) 5 cm in diameter and initially at a uniform temperature of 500 oC is suddenly placed in
controlled environment in which the temperature is maintained at 100 oC. The convection heat
transfer coefficient is 10 W/m2K. Calculate the time required to attain a temperature of 200 oC.
