Based on the previous activity, we find out that the properties of

parallelogram, theorems on trapezoid and theorems on kite are necessary in
order to solve the problems.
For further understanding about solving problems involving
parallelograms, trapezoids and kites, let’s proceed with more examples that
are challenging, exciting and interesting.

Illustrative Examples:
A. Consider the parallelogram LOUD with diagonals LU and OD that intersect
at A, answer the following questions.
L O 1. If LO= (2x+5) cm and DU = (x+10) cm,
how long is LO?
A 2. If 𝑚∠LDU = 2x+30 and 𝑚∠UOL= x+50,
what is the 𝑚∠LDU?
D U 3. If 𝑚∠LDU = x+40 and 𝑚∠DLO= 3x-20,
what is 𝑚∠LDU and 𝑚∠DLO?
4. If the measure of LA=(4x+5) inches
and UA=(x+20) inches, how long is LA?

1. If LO= (2x+5) cm and DU = (x+10) cm, how long is LO?

Solution:
LO= 2x+5 and DU= x+10 Given
Since LO= DU Opposite sides of a parallelogram are congruent
Therefore, we have:
2x+5 = x+10
2x + 5 + (-5) = x+10 + (-5) Apply Addition Property of Equality by adding -5
2x = x+5 on both sides of the equation and simplify.
2x + (-x) = x + (-x) +5 Apply Addition Property of Equality by adding -x
x=5 on both sides of the equation and simplify

The value of x is now equal to 5

LO = 2x+5 Substitute the value of x in LO= 2x+5 and
= 2 (5) +5 simplify to get the length of LO.
= 10+5
LO = 15 The length of LO is now equal to 15.
Answer: Therefore, LO = 15 cm.

2. If 𝑚∠LDU = 2x+30 and 𝑚∠UOL= x+50, what is =the 𝑚∠LDU?
Solution:
𝑚∠LDU = 2x+30 and Given
𝑚∠UOL = x+50
Since 𝑚∠LDU= 𝑚∠UOL Opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent
Therefore, we have:
2x+30 = x+50
2x+30 +(-30) = x+50 + (-30) Apply Addition Property of Equality by adding -30
2x = x+20 on both sides of the equation and simplify.
2x + (-x) = x + (-x) +20 Apply Addition Property of Equality by adding -x
x = 20 on both sides of the equation and simplify.

The value of x is now equal to 20

𝑚∠LDU = 2x + 30 Substitute the value of x in 2x+30 and simplify to
= 2(20) +30 get the 𝑚∠LDU.
= 40+30
𝑚∠LDU = 70 The 𝑚∠ LDU is now equal to 70.
Answer: Therefore, 𝑚∠LDU= 70.
3.If 𝑚∠LDU = x+40 and 𝑚∠DLO= 3x-20, what is 𝑚∠LDU and 𝑚∠DLO?
Solution:
𝑚∠LDU= x+40 and Given
𝑚∠DLO= 3x-20
Since 𝑚∠ LDU + 𝑚∠ DLO= Consecutive angles of a parallelogram are
180 supplementary.
Therefore, we have:
x+40 + 3x-20 = 180
x+40 + 3x-20 = 180 Combined like terms and simplify.
4x+20 = 180
4x+20+ (-20) =180+ (-20) Apply Addition Property of Equality by adding -20
4x = 160 on both sides of the equation and simplify.
1
( )4x = 160 ( )
1 Apply Multiplication Property of Equality by
4 4 1
multiplying on both sides of the equation and
4
x = 40 simplify.

The value of x is now equal to 40

𝑚∠LDU = x+40 Substitute the value of x in x+40 and simplify to
= 40 +40 get the 𝑚∠LDU.
= 80
𝑚∠LDU =80 The 𝑚∠LDU is now equal to 80.
𝑚∠DLO = 3x-20 Substitute the value of x in 3x-20 and simplify to
= 3(40)- 20 get the measure of angle DLO.
= 120-20
𝑚∠DLO =100 The 𝑚∠DLO is now equal to 100.
Answer: Therefore, 𝑚∠LDU= 80 and 𝑚∠DLO= 100

6
4. If the measure of LA=(4x+5) inches and UA=(x+20) inches, how long is LA?
Solution:
LA = 4x+5 and Given
UA = x+20
Since LA= UA The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each
Therefore, we have: other.
4x+5 = x+20
4x + 5+ (-5) = x+20 + (-5) Apply Addition Property of Equality by adding -5
4x = x+15 on both sides of the equation and simplify.
4x + (-x) = x + (-x) +15 Apply Addition Property of Equality by adding -x
3x = 15 on both sides of the equation and simplify.
1 1
( ) 3x = 15 ( ) Apply Multiplication Property of Equality by
3 3 1
multiplying on both sides of the equation and
3
x=5 simplify.

The value of x is now equal to 5.

LA = 4x+5 Substitute the value of x in 4x+5 and simplify to
= 4 (5) +5 get the length of LA.
= 20+5
LA = 25 The length of LA is now equal to 25.
Answer: Therefore, LA = 25 inches.
