Simile
Simile
Simile /ˈsɪmɪli/ -comparison between two things that are not alike/that are different in
order to paint a picture, give an example and make our language more descriptive and
enjoyable.
A simile is a figure of speech that compares two different things in an interesting way. They
make writing more interesting, powerful and easier to imagine for the reader when they are
used in literature. They are also used in everyday speech to express meaning quickly and
effectively.
E.g.: He is as busy as a bee. Meaning: he is working hard (as bees are known to be
extremely busy and hard working)
E.g.: I'm as snug as a bug. Meaning: the person who says this feels very comfortable or
are tucked up tight in bed.
e.g.: Life is like a box of chocolate. Meaning: life is full of surprises; you never know what
will happen next.
We use like or as...as in similes to make comparisons. BUT!!! Using “like” or “as”
doesn’t always make a simile.
