KEY FOR READING 3 Tough Communication Challenges

PRE READING

1. Life in the past without phones or instant messaging must have been challenging when it came to
communication. People relied on handwritten letters and couriers to send messages over long distances.
This process was time-consuming, and it often took weeks or even months for a message to reach its
destination. This delay could be frustrating, especially when urgent matters needed to be addressed.

2. It's difficult to imagine a time when long-distance communication was so slow. In the past, people
faced numerous challenges in staying connected. The vast geographical distances in countries like the
United States meant that it was expensive and time-consuming to travel or send messages.

3. No.
Yes, I've heard of the Pony Express. Based on the name, I would guess that it had something to do with
horses and perhaps fast delivery. The Pony Express was a mail delivery system in the 1860s where riders
on horseback would carry mail across long distances, and they were known for their speed and
efficiency. It played a crucial role in bridging communication gaps in the western United States during
that time.

CRITICAL THINKING

1. The Pony Express was crucial during its time because it offered a remarkably fast means of
communication across long distances, which was a significant challenge in the 1860s. It bridged the gap
between the East and West of the United States when there were no trains or telegraph lines connecting
these regions. The speed at which it delivered messages, just ten days coast-to-coast, was unheard of at
the time, making it an innovative and efficient system.

2. The telegraph offered several advantages over the Pony Express. It allowed for instant
communication, which was a game-changer compared to the days or weeks it took for Pony Express
riders to deliver messages. The telegraph also transmitted messages electronically, eliminating the need
for physical transport. This efficiency made it more cost-effective and reliable. Consequently, it quickly
replaced the Pony Express because it was more practical and could reach a broader audience.

3. The decision would depend on the urgency and cost. If the message was extremely urgent, I might
consider using the Pony Express, knowing it could deliver in about ten days. However, if cost and time
were less critical, I might wait for the telegraph to be completed, as it would offer a more reliable and
instant means of communication. Factors like the nature of the message, available funds, and patience
would influence my choice.
