Graphing of

Quadratic
Function
This presentation is strictly for personal use
only. It is not to be shared to anyone outside of
Grade 9 batch ’28 QCSHS nor to be uploaded
to any website.
At the end of the session, you should be able to:
graphs a quadratic function
determines the equation of a quadratic
function given: (a) a table of values; (b) graph;
(c) zero
Recall: Discriminant  b  4ac 
2

then the graph intersects

if b  4ac  0 the x – axis at exactly two points.
2

(two x-intercepts)
then the graph will touch the x – axis
if b 2  4ac  0 at its vertex or will intersect the x –axis
at exactly one point. (one x-intercept)
then the graph will never intersect nor
if b  4ac  0
2
touch the x – axis. (no x-intercept)

Steps in graphing Q.F.
1. Transform Q.F. to y  a  x  h   k
2

2. Determine the vertex V: (h,k) and plot it.

3. Assign any value of x and solve for y, then plot (x,y).
4. Reflect point (x,y) to the other side of the axis of symmetry.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
6. Connect all the points. (Don’t forget to place an arrow head on
the ends of the graph.)
