Detailed Lesson Plan in English Grade 8

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:


1. Recognize the modals used in the sentence;
2. Understand the different uses and meanings of the modal verbs;
3. Choose the appropriate modal to complete a sentence; and
4. Construct sentences using modals.

Learning Activity 1- LET’S SING!

Now, are you familiar with Ariana Grande?


Have you listened to her songs? Well, I play
one of her greatest hits with Justin Bieber-
Stuck with U. I want you to listen to the
popular song of her.
S1: Yes Ma’am!
As I play the song, I want you to keep your S2: Yes Ma’am!
eyes on the lyrics. You can also sing the
song while it’s playing but bear in mind to
sing it softly. While watching, you are going
to identify the modals used in the song.
Write your answer in your English notebook.

Today we will dig deeper on the different
modal and their functions.

modals in speaking and writing?

Modal is a verb that combines with another


verb to indicate mood or tense. It is also
known as modal auxiliary or modal verb and
classified into two, the pure modal and
semi-modal. Modal verbs or auxiliary verbs
are used if you want to express ability,
necessity, request, permission, advice,
desire, probability, etc.
FEATURES OF MODALS

 Modals are always followed by


the base form of verb.
• Jam will recite a monologue.
• She would bring the pictures.
• You shall come with us.
• I could not get my sleep last night.

 Modals are the same for all


pronouns.

• He can come tomorrow.


• We can play the instruments.
• You must go.
• I must bring some books tomorrow.

 Modals do not need auxiliaries.


They take direct negative and
question forms.

• An auxiliary verb is a verb that


adds functional or
grammatical meaning to the clause
in which it appears—for example, to
express tense, aspect, modality,
voice, emphasis, etc. Auxiliary
verbs usually accompany a
main verb.

• Auxiliary verbs are sometimes


called helping verbs because they are
needed to form many of the
tenses. The most used auxiliary verbs
are the verbs to be, to do and to
have.

 Modal phrases (or semi-modals) are


used to express the same things
as modals, but are a combination of
auxiliary verbs and the preposition to.
