DPP: solutions
1. Write down the sequence whose 𝑛𝑡ℎ terms are

2𝑛 3+(−1)𝑛
(𝑖) (𝑖𝑖)
𝑛 3𝑛

Solution:

2𝑛
(i) Let 𝑡𝑛 = 𝑛
DPP: SEQUENCE & SERIES
𝑝𝑢𝑡 𝑛 = 1, 2, 3, 4, … … … … . 𝑤𝑒 𝑔𝑒𝑡

21 22 8 16
𝑡1 = 1
= 2, 𝑡2 = 2
= 2, 𝑡3 = 3 , 𝑡4 = 4
=4

8
So, the sequence is 2, 2, 3 , 4 , … ….

3+(−1)𝑛
(ii) Let 𝑡𝑛 = 3𝑛

Put 𝑛 = 1, 2, 3, 4, … ..
3−1 2 3+1 4 3−1 2 3+1 4
𝑡1 = 3
= 3 , 𝑡2 = 9
= 9 , 𝑡3 = 27
= 27 , 𝑡4 = 81
= 81

2 4 2 4
So, the sequence is 3 , 9 , 27 , 81 … ….

2. 𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 4, 12, 20 … .108.

Solution:

𝑎 = 4, 𝑑 = 8

𝑆𝑜, 108 = 4 + (𝑛 − 1)8

104
⟹𝑛−1= 8
⟹ 𝑛 − 1 = 13 ⟹ 𝑛 = 14

3. 7𝑡ℎ 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑛 𝐴. 𝑃 𝑖𝑠 40, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 13 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑖𝑠

𝑎. 53 𝑏 520 𝑐 1040 𝑑 2080

Solution:
13
𝑆13 = {2𝑎 + 12𝑑} = 13{𝑎 + 6𝑑} = 13 × 𝑇7 = 13 × 40 = 520
2

4. Find the sum of all the three-digit natural numbers which on division by 7 leaves remainder 3.

Solution:

Three-digit natural numbers which on division by 7 leaves remainder 3.

𝐴𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑟𝑒 101,108,115 … … . .997.

997 = 101 + (𝑛 − 1)7 ⟹ 𝑛 = 129

129
𝑠𝑜 𝑆= [101 + 997] = 70821
2

5. The sum of three numbers in A.P. is 27 and the sum of their squares is 293, find them.

Solution:
DPP: SEQUENCE & SERIES
Let the numbers be

𝑎 − 𝑑, 𝑎, 𝑎 + 𝑑

Given, sum of three numbers in A.P. = 27

𝑎 − 𝑑 + 𝑎 + 𝑎 + 𝑑 = 27

⟹ 3𝑎 = 27 ⟹ 𝑎 = 9

𝐴𝑙𝑠𝑜 (𝑎 − 𝑑)2 + 𝑎2 + (𝑎 + 𝑑)2 = 293.

3𝑎2 + 2𝑑2 = 293

⟹ 2𝑑2 = 293 − 3(92 ) ⟹ 𝑑2 = 25 ⟹ 𝑑 = ±5

Therefore, numbers are 4, 9, 14

6. 𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑆 = 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + ⋯ … … . 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓

(𝑖) 𝐹𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 20 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 (𝑖𝑖) 𝐼𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠.

Solution:
1
(1−( )20 ) 220 −1
2
(i) 𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑠𝑡 20 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠: 𝑆20 = 1 = 219
1−

1
(𝑖𝑖) 𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝐼𝑛𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠: 𝑆∞ = 1 =2
1−
2

7. 𝐼𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑥𝑡ℎ 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑛 𝐻. 𝑃. 𝑖𝑠 10 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 11𝑡ℎ 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 𝑖𝑠 18 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 16𝑡ℎ 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚.

Solution:
1
𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑎 + 5𝑑 = 10…. (i)

1
𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑎 + 10𝑑 = 18
…. (ii)

Equation (ii) – equation (i), we get

1 1 4 2
5𝑑 = 18 − 10 = − 90 ⇒ 𝑑 = − 225

13
𝑂𝑛 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑓𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (𝑖), 𝑤𝑒 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑎 = 90

13 2 1
𝑁𝑜𝑤, 𝑡16 = 𝑎 + 15𝑑 = 90
− 15 = 90

Hence the 16th term is 90.

DPP: SEQUENCE & SERIES
8. 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑃 2, 6, 18, 54, … … . 𝑖𝑠 4374?

a 6th

b. 7th

c. 8th

d 9th

Solution:

𝐴𝑠 𝑤𝑒 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑎 𝐺𝑃 𝑖𝑠 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑏𝑦 ∶ 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎𝑟 𝑛−1

𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑒 , 𝑎 = 2, 𝑟 = 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑎𝑛 = 4374

⟹ 4374 = (2). (3)𝑛−1

⟹ 3𝑛−1 = 2187

⟹ 3𝑛−1 = 37

∴ 𝑛−1=7

𝑆𝑜, 𝑛 = 8

Hence, 4374 is the 8th term of the given sequence.
