What does 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 mean?

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) is the same thing as 𝑦𝑦.

𝑥𝑥 is the independent variable

𝑦𝑦 is the dependent variable

A function is a relationship between two variables such that to each value of the independent
variable there corresponds exactly on value of the dependent variable.

What does this mean?

Every 𝑦𝑦 has only one 𝑥𝑥 coordinate. OR All the 𝑥𝑥’s are different.

Is this a function?

𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 1 𝑦𝑦 = −𝑥𝑥 + 1 This is a linear function. There is only one y value for each x.

𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑦𝑦 2 = 1 𝑦𝑦 2 = 1 − 𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 = ±√1 − 𝑥𝑥 2 This is not a function as there are two y values for

every x.

𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑦𝑦 = 1 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 1 This is a function as there is only one y value for every x.

𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 2 = 1 𝑦𝑦 2 = 1 − 𝑥𝑥 𝑦𝑦 = ±√1 − 𝑥𝑥 This is not a function as there are two y values for every x .

Vertical line test

Use the vertical line test to verify if these are functions or not.

Not a function.
Not a function.

Domain and Range of the Function

The domain is the x coordinate.

The range is the y coordinate.

What is the domain of each function?

Square roots The function under the square root > 0

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = √𝑥𝑥 − 3
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = √16 − 𝑥𝑥 2

Denominators

1
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥

(𝑥𝑥−2)
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = (𝑥𝑥−2)(𝑥𝑥+3)2

Square roots in the denominator

Piecewise Functions

𝑥𝑥 + 3 𝑥𝑥 < 0
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) =
𝑥𝑥 2 𝑥𝑥 ≥ 0

There are two pieces to this graph.

One piece is every 𝑥𝑥 value to the right of 0.

One piece is every 𝑥𝑥 value to the right of 0.

One-to-One Function

A function is one-to-one if it has an inverse. You can check to see if it is one-

to-one by using the horizontal line test.

Evaluating a Function:
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 2𝑥𝑥 2 − 4𝑥𝑥 + 1

𝑓𝑓(−1) =

𝑓𝑓(0) =

𝑓𝑓(2) =

Is this function one-to-one?

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 + 7

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 + 3) =

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥 + ∆𝑥𝑥) =

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥+∆𝑥𝑥)−𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥)

Definition of a Composite Function

(𝑓𝑓 ∘ 𝑔𝑔)(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑓𝑓(𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥))

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 − 4 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2

Inverse Functions

𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) is the inverse function of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) if

Find the inverse function.

Steps:

1) Switch the variables.

2) Solve for 𝑦𝑦.

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 2𝑥𝑥 − 1

2𝑥𝑥−3
𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 4𝑥𝑥+1

𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑥𝑥 2 − 1
