Calculus 1.

Distance Formula

Finding a distance between two points

If the x coordinates are the same, just subtract the y values.

(3, 2)& (3, −9)

2 − (−9) = 11

If the y coordinates are the same, just subtract the x values.

(5, −6)& (−2, −6)

5 − (−6) = 11

Graphing and creating a right triangle

62 + 32 = 𝑑𝑑 2
36 + 9 = 𝑑𝑑 2
45 = 𝑑𝑑2
3√5 = 𝑑𝑑

Verifying a Right Triangle

Show that these three points are the vertices of a right triangle.

𝐴𝐴(1, 3) 𝐵𝐵(1, 7) 𝐶𝐶(5, 3)

𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 = 4

𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵 = (1 − 5)2 + (7 − 3)2 = √16 + 16 = 4√2

𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 = 4

42 + 42 = 4√2 16 + 16 = 32
Given the distance, find a missing x or y coordinate

The distance between (2, 3) & (𝑥𝑥, 6) is 8, solve for 𝑥𝑥.

(𝑥𝑥 − 2)2 + (6 − 3)2 = 8

(𝑥𝑥 − 2)2 + 9 = 64
(𝑥𝑥 − 2)2 = 55
𝑥𝑥 − 2 = ±√55 𝑥𝑥 = 2 ± √55

Midpoint

Concept Finding the average between two numbers.

Given 𝐴𝐴(3, 6) is the midpoint of BC with 𝐵𝐵(−2, 13), find C.

(−2, 13) (3, 6)

x’s from -2 to 3 is 5 add to 5 to 3 𝑥𝑥 = 8

y’s from 13 to 6 is -7 subtract 7 from 6 y= -1

𝐶𝐶 = (8, −1)

Board It Up

1) Find the distance between (−2, 4)& (5, 8).

2) Find the distance between (2, 5) & (2, 39.2).

3) Verify that these three points form a right triangle.

𝐴𝐴(3, −2) 𝐵𝐵(8, −2) 𝐶𝐶) 𝐶𝐶(8, 4)

4) If the distance between 𝐴𝐴(𝑥𝑥, 4) & 𝐵𝐵(2, 6) is 5. Find x.

5) Find the midpoint of AB with 𝐴𝐴(−2, 9)& 𝐵𝐵(6, −1).
