In groups of up to 3 students, choose descriptive research question(s) and find an appropriate
dataset for your analysis. Use methods from the course to answer your research question(s).
One-page description of dataset, worth 10 points, due November 6th
It should include the following sections:
- Research question and motivation – what is the question you want to answer and why is it important? (2 points) - Description of data – who produced the data; how was it produced (survey, experiment, census etc.) and for what purpose; type and structure of the dataset (2 points) - Include a link or bibliographic citation to the dataset - Description of variables of interest (4 points) - Explain what these variables measure; why are these variables in your chosen dataset suitable for answering your question? - Produce summary statistics (organize it in a table) - Include one informative graph - Table and graph should be appropriately labeled. Describe in the body of the text what we learn from the table and the graph. - Table and graph do not count towards the 1 page limit. Put the table and graph on a separate page. - Plan for answering research question (1 point) - Briefly describe what strategy or strategies you will use to answer your research question. (hypothesis test or multivariate analysis) - Style and organization - writing is well-organized and easy to follow (1 point)
Supplementary materials, worth 2 points, due November 27th
- Excel file with raw data and reference to source (1 point)
- Tidy data and instructions for reproducibility/calculations (1 point) - Submit the supplementary materials with your final report
Final report, worth 13 points, due November 27th
- Includes the following sections: motivation, summary of research question(s), description
of data, analysis and results, and conclusion (1 point) - Demonstrates application of appropriate methods from the course to analyze research question(s) (3 points) o Must include summary statistics o Include at least two of the following: • Graphical analysis • Hypothesis testing • Multivariate analysis - Includes appropriate labels in figures and tables. Explains the tables and figures in the body of the text. (1 point) - Correctly interprets results of analysis (2 points) - The analysis answers the question proposed in the Motivation and Research Question sections (1 point) - Discusses the drawbacks of the chosen approach and the limitations of the dataset. What is the ideal dataset you would like to have in order to answer your research question? (2 points) - Conclusion adequately summarizes findings and proposes an avenue for further study (2 points) - Grammar, style, and organization (1 point)
