Lab On Diffusion Chemistry
Lab On Diffusion Chemistry
Aim: To investigate the rate of diffusion of ammonia gas and hydrogen chloride gas
Diagram
1. A suitable piece of universal indicator paper that runs along the gas tube was cut
2. Universal indicator strip was marked with 2cm intervals
3. The strip of universal indicator paper was slightly moistened with distilled water and was
run along the inside length of the glass tube.
4. A cotton ball was saturated using concentrated ammonia solution, and another cotton ball
was saturated using concentrated hydrochloric acid. One of the two saturated cotton balls
was placed on either end of the glass tube, and the tube was stoppered immediately.
Simultaneously, the stopwatch was started.
5. The time it took for the universal indicator paper to change color from both ends of the
glass tube towards the location where a white ring formed was recorded.
6. All observations were recorded and tabulated.
Results
Observation
Overtime, the gases diffusion across the glass and formed a white cloud. The researcher also
noted that the ammonia gas diffused faster and moved a further distance than the Hydrochloric
acid gas.
Discussion
Precautions
Sources of error
Conclusion
The researcher can conclude that diffusion does support the particulate theory of matter.
Reflection
The diffusion lab provided an immersive and enlightening opportunity for the researcher to
explore the captivating realm of particle movement at a deeper level. The researcher was able to
successfully observe how diffusion works.
