AICT ASSIGNMENT Topic: Analog Computers

Submitted By:
Name: Farhan Shakeel
Reg No.: 2024-CS-461
Section: B
Analog Computers:
A computer that performs calculations such as division, Analog Computer
multiplication, etc by using continuous variation of physical signals such as electric and mechanical signals
to generate required output is called analogue computer.

Examples:
 Oscilloscope: It is used to monitor electronic signals.
 Tide Predictors: They use a system of gears and cams to predict the height of a wave.
 Speedometer: It is an excellent analogue computer. It consists of freely moving needle and two wires
attached to a magnet and gear shaft respectively. When the car moves, it takes input in the form of
rotating cam shaft and due to the rotation, the magnet generates magnetic field which than deflects
the needle to show us the actual speed.
 Seismometer: It uses weights and levers to detect earthquakes and plot a graph due to the vibration
caused by earthquake which moves the weights and levers.

Necessity of Analog Computers:

 At present, we still need analogue computers because they are very good at performing only a certain
type of task like solving complex differential equations or measuring speed, velocity, height, etc.
 If we use analogue computers for a particular task, then they are also very accurate and perform
calculations using less energy thus, are more energy efficient.
 Also, analogue computers also provide greater security protection against hacking since there are no
digital signals and can be used in firing systems of destroyers, submarines, military equipment, etc.

Comparison of Digital & Analog Computers:

Analog Computers Digital Computers

1. It can perform calculations in 1. It can perform fast calculations
real-time with better result. due to better multi-tasking.
2. It can be programmed for a 2. It requires complex

3. It does not have storage but 4. It contains storage devices like

5. It can be used in vehicle 4. It is widely used i.e. creating
simulations, data centres, software’s, documentation, web-
engineering simulations, etc. browsing, streaming video’s, etc.
