Understanding

Internet Services
Objectives:

● Search for an information using different search

operators
● Create a blog account in Blogger or Wordpress
● Write a blog describing the different Internet services
and types of websites
Have you tried writing your feelings and thoughts on paper...
every day? Keeping a diary, or journal writing for some, has
been a practice for many people of different ages. With the
development of technology, journal writing has joined the
bandwagon of putting one's life online. From pages of a
notebook-like diary, journal writing has been rocking the
cyber world.

So do you want to put your diary in electronic format?

01 Electronic Mail (Email)
➔ The oldest and the most popular Internet service,
electronic mail (email)
➔ One-way transmission or exchanging of messages and files
over a computer network to one or more specified user.
➔ Store-and-forward model. This model does not require the
sender and the receiver of the message to be online at the
same time while sending and receiving the messages.
➔ The email servers accept, forward, deliver, and store
messages.
Free online email applications are:
Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail

Most popular desktop email applications:

MS Outlook, Windows Live, and Mozilla's Thunderbird

These email applications can create, send, receive, forward,

store, print, and delete email. The message can be a simple
text or can also include an attachment like a document, an
image, an audio clip, or a video clip.
Email Address:
Sending a message digitally requires
the name and the email address of the
receiver of the message.
How about the email address of the
sender? It is already embedded in the
program when the sender installed it or
registered to use the email service.
❏ It is a combination of a username and
a domain name that identifies the user
so that he or she can receive an email. [email protected]
USER NAME
It is a unique combination of characters (letters of the
alphabet and numbers) that identifies a specific user. It is unique
that a username must be different from other usernames in the
same domain. So, if the username rosamia is already registered in
Yahoo, no one else can register it. The email program prompts the
user if the username is no longer available and suggests other
usernames close to rosamia like rosamia_00, rosamia2014, and
the likes. If the user insists on having the same username, he or
she can still register it in other email programs.

Examples: johndoe, jdoe65, jdlovestofish, alwayssunnyinphilly.

Carbon copy (cc)
A copy of the email message sent to
an addressee other than the main
recipient of the email message.
Blind carbon copy (BCC)
A copy of the email message sent to a
recipient whose email address does
not appear in the message. So those
whose email addresses are in the To
and CC do not know about BCC
recipient.
Return Receipt
It is a message the email system sends
to the sender of the message after it
has been opened. Using a return
receipt is a good practice when you
are not sure if the email address is
still active.
Mailing List
Is a group of email names and
email addresses given a single
name or entity. When an email
is sent to the mailing list,
every person on the list
receives a copy of the message
in his or her email inbox. For
example, your class batch may
add you to its mailing list in
order to keep you updated on
your batch activities.
If you want to add yourself in the mailing list, you need to subscribe
to it with your email name and email address. You can also remove
yourself from your list by unsubscribing from the mailing list.
Newsgroup / Message Board
It is an online discussion about a
particular topic. Users
participating in a newsgroup
posts a message called an
article. Other users read and
reply to the article. To
participate in a newsgroup, a
user needs to register first. A
thread or threaded discussion is
composed of the original article
and all related replies.
File Transfer Protocol
FTP is an Internet standard
that allows file uploading and
downloading with other
computers on the Internet.
Many operating systems
include FTP capabilities. In
case your operating system
does not offer FTP, the
program can easily be
downloaded from the Web for
a minimal fee, if not free.
Chat
A chat is a real-time typed
conversation that takes place
over a computer network. This
service allows Internet users
who are hooked to the same
chat channel to see the text you
type on your computer, and the
text of other active users or
chatters typing on his or her
computer.
Some chat rooms support
voice chats and video chats.
Chat system is faster than
email because users almost
simultaneously sends and reads
messages. But this requires a
longer Internet time because
chatters need to stay online
when chatting.
Instant Messaging
A real-time Internet
communication service,
instant messaging (IM) notifies
the user when one or more
people are online and then
allows him or her to exchange
messages or files or join a
private chat room with them.
Some IM services support
voice and video conversations,
and even photo and document
sharing. There are IM services
that send alerts on calendar
appointments, stock quotes,
weather, or sports scores. You
can also listen to streaming
music, and play games within
an IM service.
For instant messaging to work,
both parties must be online at the
same time. The receiver of the
message must be willing to accept
the invitation to chat for the
conversation to start. He or she can
ignore the message or block the
sender of the message.
02 Search Engine
➔ Researchers' best friend
➔ A special group of interconnected computer servers in a
data center, and interconnected data center in a unique
system, a search engine can be:
(1) internal through a private network or restricted
network
(2) web-based and public.
A web-based public search engine is helpful in locating
information that you do not know the exact web address of or are
not really looking for a particular website but in need of
information about a topic. There are several search engines for all
types of search engine. Some search engines can restrict its
searches to a specific type of information such as:
❖ Images - pictures, diagrams, and drawings
❖ Videos - home videos, music videos, television programs, and
movie clips
❖ Audio - music, songs, recordings, and sounds
❖ Publications - news articles, journals, and books
❖ Maps maps of a business or address, or driving directions to a
destination
❖ People or Businesses - addresses and telephone numbers
❖ Blogs - specific opinions and ideas of others

To improve searches, the following are techniques that can also be

employed:
❏ Use specific nouns.
❏ Put the most important term or terms first in the search text.
❏ List all possible spellings, for example, ecommerce or e-
commerce.
❏ Better read the Help section of the search engine used.
❏ If the search is unsuccessful with one search engine, try
another.
To build and maintain lists of
words or keywords found on websites,
many search engines use a program
called spider. When you enter search
text, the search engine scans this list
for hits.
Search Engine Spider: Also known as a
web crawler, is an Internet bot that
crawls websites and stores
information for the search engine to
index.
➔ Some search engines that work with navigation devices are
location-based. (For instance, when you search for the
branches of a fast food chain, your mobile device will display
the branches nearest to your current location.)
➔ Google.com is considered as the largest search engine these
days.
➔ If you enter a phrase with spaces between the words in the
search text, most search engines display results (hits) that
include all of the words, except for common words like to, the,
and.
World Wide Web
Considered as the youngest but
most important Internet service
to date. A website is being
