Formatting Images

When we add a picture in our word document, a contextual tab Format appears on the
ribbon. You can further format your pictures in your document using this tab. It has 5 groups of
related commands:
1. Adjust
2. Picture Styles
3. Accessibility
4. Arrange
5. Size

Adjust
Adjust Group provides various options to enhance and modify your images.
The options available in adjust group are:
Remove Background: This option allows you to remove the background of the picture. The

major drawback of this option is that most of the time it does not work efficiently.
Correction: This option allows you to enhance the quality of your picture. You can adjust:
 Sharpness: Make the picture clearer or blurrier.
 Brightness: Make the picture lighter or darker.
 Contrast: Increase or decrease the difference between the light and dark areas.
Color: This feature helps you modify the color attributes of your picture:
 Saturation: Adjust the intensity of the colors.
 Color Tone: Change the warmth or coolness of the colors.
 Recolor: Apply a color filter to change the overall hue of the picture.

Artistic Effects: Apply different effects to your picture to give it a unique look, such as:
 Sketch
 Chalk Sketch
 Paint Brush
 Textured effects like Mosaic Bubbles
Picture Styles
Picture Styles offers a variety of predefined styles and effects to give your images a
polished, professional look.

The options available are:


Quick Styles: These are pre-designed styles that you can apply to your pictures with a single
click. Quick Styles combine different borders, effects, and formats to give your picture a
distinctive look.
Picture Border: This option allows you to add borders around your pictures. You can
customize:
 Color: Select from various colors.
 Width: Adjust the thickness of the border.
 Style: Choose different styles, such as dashed, solid, or double lines.
Picture Effects: This feature lets you enhance your pictures with different effects, including:
 Shadow: Adds depth by casting a shadow behind the picture.
 Reflection: Creates a mirror image effect beneath the picture.
 Glow: Adds a glowing effect around the picture's edges.
 Soft Edges: Blurs the edges of the picture to give it a softer look.
 Bevel: Creates a three-dimensional effect on the edges.
 3-D Rotation: Rotates the picture in a three-dimensional space for a dynamic look.
Picture Layouts: This option integrates your picture with various layouts, such as:
 SmartArt Graphics: Combine pictures and text in visually appealing diagrams.
 Grid Layouts: Arrange pictures in structured grids for better organization.
Accessibility
This feature allows you to add alternative text (alt text) to images. Alt text is a
description of the picture that can be read by screen readers. When you add alt text, you provide
a textual alternative to the visual content, enabling better comprehension for those who rely on
assistive technologies.
Arrange
Arrange Group provides several tools to help you organize and
position your images within a document.
The options available are:
Position: This option allows you to set the precise location of your picture
within the document. You can choose predefined positions (like top left,
center, bottom right, etc.) or set a custom position based on the page
layout.
Wrap Text: This feature controls how text flows around the picture.
Options include:
 In Line with Text: The picture behaves like a text character, moving with the text.

 Square: Text wraps around the picture in a square shape.


 Tight: Text wraps closely around the contours of the image.
 Through: Text flows through the transparent areas of the picture.
 Top and Bottom: Text appears above and below the picture, not on the sides.
 Behind Text: The picture appears behind the text, allowing for layered effects.
 In Front of Text: The picture sits above the text, making it fully visible without overlap.
Bring Forward / Send Backward: These options allow you to change the layering of images
and objects:
 Bring Forward: Moves the selected picture one layer up in the stacking order.
 Send Backward: Moves the selected picture one layer down.
Group: If you have multiple objects selected (such as pictures and shapes), you can group them
together.
Align: This feature helps to align the picture with other objects or text in your document.
Options include aligning left, center, right, top, middle, and bottom.
Rotate: This option lets you rotate the picture to different angles. You can manually drag to
rotate or use predefined rotation options.

Size
The options available are:

Crop: This tool allows you to remove unwanted parts of your picture. You can:
 Crop to Shape: Crop the picture to a specific shape.
 Aspect Ratio: Maintain specific width-to-height ratios while cropping.
 Crop to Fill or Fit: Fill a shape or fit within a shape.
Size: Adjust the overall dimensions of your picture:
 Height: Set the height of your picture.
 Width: Set the width of your picture.
