Installing Redhat Linux on Virtual Machine

1. Click on OK and note that the Right Control is the host key ( a key you press to
return to normal operation)

2. The installation now begins , choose Install or upgrade an existing system and press
enter
3. You may test for the media by clicking OK or just Skip, use tab to select option

4. Choose Next
5. Choose English(English) as the language on installation and click Next

6. Choose U.S English as the keyboard layout and click Next

.
7. Leave the default Basic Storage Devices as the device types and click Next

8. Choose Yes, discard my data


9. Fill in your preferred host name and click Next

10. Choose Africa/Addis Ababa as the time zone


11. Fill in root password

12. Choose Use All Space

Accept the write changes to disk option, the system will be creating the appropriate
logical partitions, and volumes
13. On the softwares to install section choose server type as basic and choose customize
now for software selections
14. Choose all under Base system
15. Choose as shown above under Servers
16. Choose none under web services, databases, virtualization and language
17. Choose all under Desktops and Development
18. Then click Next, the installation process will begin and take some time.

19. After installation is finished the system will ask for reboot
20. After rebooting a welcome screen appears with some more steps to setup the
systemClick Forward

21. Click yes I agree to the license agreement and press forward
22. This sceen will set up software updates using the network connection but it can be
skipped Click forward

23. Here you will be asked to create a non-administrative user, just fill in the user and
passwords and click forward
24. Here you can set the date and time of the server and click forward

25. Here click to enable kdump and click finish, and click Yes to reboot since this change
requires a reboot.
26. After rebooting and loggin in as the new user or root ,the linux virtual machine is up
and ready for use.

27. Configuring Network on the virtual machine


40.1 If the network on the host machine is connected to switch , then configure
the ip address of the linux machine network eth0 in the same subnet as the
hosts local area connection. If not ( the cable is unplugged ) then change the
attached to setting to host only adapter and configure the virtualbox host
only network ip address (under network adapters) and the host ip in the
same subnet. This setting is used in this configuration.
To configure the ip address of the linux machine

40.2 Login to the machine

40.3 Go to System > Preferences > Network connections

40.4 Choose system-eth0 and click on Edit


40.5. Click on ipv4 settings , choose manual as Method and click add and fill in the ip
address, subnet mask and gateway.Click Apply

40.6. Then to activate eth0 use the network icon on the top right corner , click on it ,
chose system-eth0 which will refresh the settings.

40.7. Now check by pinging the ip address form the host machine and the virtual
machine.

Cloning
To have a new machine similar to the one already installed , you can just clone the
already created virtual machine. The steps to clone this machine are

Go to the Virtual Box manager

Rightclick on the virtual machine corresponding to the created server and choose
clone

Choose full clone

The cloning process will take some time

Ater cloning

Change the IP address and host name of the cloned server
