Best Practices – Applying Update 24.3

Introduction
With release OpenText™ Extended ECM CE 24.3, we have simplified software delivery
and installation. What was previously installed separately has now been consolidated
for OpenText™ Content Server. Independently, whether you have licensed Content
Server, Content Suite Platform, Extended ECM Platform, Extended ECM for
Microsoft® Office 365®, Extended ECM for SAP Solutions, Extended ECM for SAP
SuccessFactors, Extended ECM for Salesforce, Extended ECM for Engineering, or
Extended ECM for Government, you get the same Content Server. Content Server
combines related products, modules, and components in one installable software
package. There is no need to identify, check compatibility, check availability, and install
modules individually. By consolidating and simplifying our Content Server delivery, we
expect to provide a clearer view of all the capabilities and opportunities Extended ECM
can bring to you and your business. You will find these capabilities as structural
elements in this Release Notes document, as well as in the documentation.
For more information, review section 3.4 Documentation in the Extended ECM CE
24.3 Release Notes.
Update patches for OpenText™ Extended ECM CE are cumulative and are released
every quarter to correct errors in the software, address security issues, and provide
product enhancements.
Updates contain all fixes and enhancements from all previous Updates for that version
of Extended ECM CE. There is no need to install each of them all in sequence.
Updates are deployed using OpenText™ System Center Manager. This document
walks you, the Extended ECM CE Administrator, through the deployment of an
Extended ECM CE Update using only System Center Manager.

Backups
It is both a good practice and highly recommended to make full backups, including the
following, prior to installing a patch:
• OpenText Content Server (OTCS) installation directory (OTHOME)
• Database
• Index

Information reimagined 3
Best Practices – Applying Update 24.3

• External File Store (EFS)

Backups should be located on another drive, machine, or tape. Data across these
components of Extended ECM CE must be in sync with each other to maintain data
integrity. In addition, backups cannot be safely done asynchronously if Extended ECM
CE is active. Shut down the OTCS services prior to starting the backup.
With some Update releases, there may be instances where the index structure will be
modified; therefore a backup of the index is necessary. If you have a clustered
environment with multiple admin servers, verify that all admin servers are running and
available before shutting them down.

IMPORTANT: Before making any changes, always ensure that

you have backups of your search index, all the files in the \config\
directory and the existing otsearch.jar file.
For a complete list of new features and fixed issues, please refer
to the Extended ECM CE 24.3 Release Notes.

Case Study Scenario

Current State of the System
The system is bilingual (English and French), and the current patch level is 24.2.
The test environment is an exact replica of the production environment.

Best Practices – Applying Update 24.3

Documentation Review
The first step is to review the Extended ECM CE 24.3 Release Notes thoroughly. This
is mandatory. From this review you can also check to see if any of the installed hotfixes
on the system are now included in the new Update. The Extended ECM CE 24.3
Release Notes describe updates and last-minute changes in the corresponding version
of OTCS. These Release Notes provide an overview of Extended ECM Family CE 24.3
including new features, delivery information, and supported platforms.
These Release Notes apply to the following products:
• Content Suite 24.3
• Extended ECM for Engineering 24.3
• Extended ECM for Government 24.3

OpenText recommends that you read these Release Notes in conjunction with any
other supplied documentation with the Update patch for a complete list of changes.
The patch Release file is broken down into the following sections:
• Introduction
• New Features
• Packaging and Documentation
• Installation and Upgrade Notes
• Fixes of Note
• Security Fixes
• Important Information
• Contact Information
It is critical that you review the Release Notes and note any items that are relevant to
your system.
Next, the Search Engine 24.3 Release Notes document is reviewed for
information on any changes.

IMPORTANT: It is possible that the tracking number for the issue

you reported has been included under a master tracking number,
so it may not appear in the Readme file. Contact OpenText
Customer Support for assistance.

The Extended ECM CE 24.3 Notable Fixes document is a Microsoft® Excel

spreadsheet detailing the notable fixes for this update.
The Extended ECM 24.3 Known Issues document lists all known issues with this
release
With all the documentation reviewed, the next step will be to ensure the environment
is up to date on patches for the current patch level. All the next steps are performed in
a test environment prior to application on the production environment.

Update Your Environment

A best practice is to update your environment with the latest hotfixes for your current
update level. This operation can be performed as part of applying the update. This
operation will be performed using System Center Manager.
The System Center Manager application is designed to manage updates and patches
across the cluster. Use System Center Manager to keep your supported OpenText
software products up to date, using its built-in patching and updating capabilities.
System Center Manager has a manifest that is updated daily, making it aware of
software patches and updates as soon as they become available. System Center
Manager oversees the entire patching process. It downloads patches and updates and
applies them automatically and systematically.
The System Center Manager manifest also contains information on OpenText product
releases, so it can inform you of any new OpenText software that becomes available.
You can obtain product information and download product installers automatically from
the System Center Manager Catalog. Once you have downloaded a product installer
to System Center Manager, you can use it in an Execution Plan to install software on
your managed Systems.
