TOPIC: Teaching Social Studies at Different Educational Levels
INTRODUCTION
★ Education plays a pivotal role in shaping the minds of our youth and preparing them for
the complexities of the world. One critical aspect that demands our attention is the
teaching of social sciences in Philippine schools. As we delve into this topic, we uncover
the reasons why recognizing the importance of social sciences education is crucial for
our students and our society as a whole.
ELEMENTARY LEVEL
Primary objective: To introduce basic concepts of social studies and develop
foundational skills in understanding the world and society.
Social studies that are taught in elementary schools involve making young children understand
their family and community well. Social studies are the source of knowledge and understanding
to the youngsters in the elementary schools (Parker, 2003).
Social studies help young children to understand how the present is arrived at through learning
some historical events (Parker, 2003). Children should be given an opportunity to understand the
environment surrounding them and the factors that cause changes to the environment.
Social studies at the elementary level should provide students with purposeful and meaningful
learning experiences that are challenging, of high quality, developmentally appropriate, and
reflective of contemporary social and diverse global realities.
Knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for informed and thoughtful participation in society
require a systematically developed elementary programs focused on concepts from the core
social studies disciplines: civics, economics, geography and history.
● Understanding of Self and Society: Introduce students to the concept of community,
family, and the roles individuals play within a society.
● Basic Historical and Geographical Knowledge: Teach students about their country, its
history, important landmarks, and geographical features. Fostering a strong sense of
Filipino identity and preserving our rich cultural heritage.
● Civic Responsibility and Values: Foster an understanding of basic rights,
responsibilities, and social norms. Emphasize respect for diversity, cooperation, and
ethical behavior. Preparing students to be responsible and engaged citizens.
● Critical Thinking and Inquiry: Encourage curiosity and simple inquiry-based learning
about historical events, people, and places.
● Connection to Real Life: Help students relate their learning to real-world situations and
experiences. Promote the development of basic problem-solving and decision-making
skills.
The purpose of elementary school social studies is to enable students to understand,
participate in, and make informed decisions about their world. Social studies content allows
young learners explain relationships with other people, to institutions, and to environment, and
equips them with knowledge and understanding of the past.
SOCIAL STUDIES IN SECONDARY LEVEL
The secondary social studies is designed to develop the knowledge and skills of history,
geography, civics, and economics that will enable students to put into perspective people,
places, ideas, and events that have shaped our state, our nation, and our world.
OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL
Social studies educates students on citizenship, providing them with the knowledge,
skills and attitudes that will help them to become competent and responsible citizens
who are informed, thoughtful, participate in their community and exhibit moral and
civic virtues.
● To provide learners with the necessary knowledge to solve personal and social
challenges.
● To educate individuals how to respect other people and cultures.
TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL
● History, students will develop an understanding of the past, present, and future
of our society and the society of others.
● Geography, they will develop an understanding of spatial relationships by
looking at human and physical characteristics of places, how different groups
interact with their environment, and how our communities and nations are
affected by conditions and events in other places.
● Civics will help them understand politics and government in order to be
informed citizens and to participate in the public life of our community, state,
and nation.
● Economics will help them understand the function of the economy in our society
and the world; their role as an employer, worker, producer, or consumer; and
their role in the global marketplace.
TERTIARY LEVEL
Primary objective: To foster a deep, comprehensive understanding of social studies
disciplines, while promoting specialized knowledge, critical inquiry, and academic
research.
● Advanced Analysis and Theoretical Understanding: Students will engage with
complex social, political, and economic theories. They will analyze and critique
historical and current events from multiple perspectives.
● Interdisciplinary Integration: Teach students to make connections between
history, sociology, economics, political science, geography, and anthropology, and
to understand the interrelationships among these disciplines.
● Research and Scholarly Writing: Focus on developing the ability to conduct
independent research, engage with scholarly sources, and write academic papers
that contribute to the field.
● Global and National Perspectives: Encourage an understanding of global issues,
international relations, and national contexts, focusing on both local and global
perspectives on critical issues such as inequality, global warming, international
conflicts, and development.
● Social Advocacy and Responsibility: Instill an understanding of social justice,
human rights, and the importance of participating in community and global
advocacy efforts.
● Leadership and Professional Development: Prepare students for careers in
education, government, non-profit organizations, business, or any field that
requires a solid understanding of social systems and dynamics.
The objective of Social studies in tertiary level is to give students an apprehension in a
real-world task and to perform actively in civic engagement with the use of their skills
in communication, problem solving, decision making, creative/critical thinking, and
values.
Social Knowledge: In addition to providing social experience and social skills a study of
social studies also provides a lot of information regarding man relationships this
knowledge helps the child to know the correct facts and helps in to make correct
interpretation, judgments and generalization.
CONCLUSION
At each educational level, the objectives of teaching Social Studies evolve to match the
developmental stage of the students:
● At the elementary level, the focus is on basic knowledge and fostering a sense of
identity and community.
● At the secondary level, students are introduced to more critical thinking and
in-depth analysis of history, society, and politics.
● At the tertiary level, the emphasis shifts to specialized knowledge, academic
research, and a deeper understanding of the complexities of global and national
issues.
Through these stages, Social Studies education aims to develop informed, active, and
responsible citizens who understand the dynamics of society, history, and global
interconnections.
