Answer all the questions in this Section

1. Without using a calculator, evaluate. (3mks)

2. Security lights have been erected along both sides of streets in Nakuru town. The lights
are 50 metres apart along the right-hand side of the road and 80 metres apart on the left-
hand side. At one end of the road, two lights are directly opposite each other. Find the
total number of lights that will be erected when the poles are directly opposite each
other again at the end of the road. (3mks)

3. Use tables of reciprocals, squares and square roots to evaluate: (3mks)

is 45o. Determine the angle of elevation of the top of the building from point A.
(Give your answer correct to 1 d.p.). (3mks)

8. Find the mass of a steel bar in kilograms if the bar is 1.5cm long, 10cm wide and
10mm thick given that the density of the steel bar is 7.7g/cm3. (3mks)

12. In the figure below PQ is parallel to SR. PR and QS intersect at T. Given that SR =

13. A right-angled triangle is such that its base is Pcm and the other two sides are
(P+1)cm and (P + 2)cm respectively, calculate the length of the longest side of the
triangle. (4mks)

14. The figure below shows a rectangle of dimensions 8cm by 3cm inside a semi-circle.
Given that O is the centre of the semi-circle and mid-point of AB, calculate the area of
the shaded region. (Use ℼ = 3.142). (3mks)

15. In a fundraising drive there was 500 people present, men and women. Each man
contributed shs.300 and each woman contributed shs.250. The funds drive raised a
total of shs.136,800. Find the number of men present during the drive. (3mks)

Answer any FIVE questions in this section

17. Peter and James decided to start a business. Peter contributed Kshs.400,000 and
James Kshs.640,000. The two men agreed that in any year 15% of the profit shall be
divided equally between them and 20% of the profit will be used to meet the cost of
the business and the rest to be shared in the ratio of their contributions. The profit
made after the first year was Kshs.432,000.
a) How much did they set aside towards the cost of running the business for the 2nd year.

b) How much did James receive at the end of the first year. (4mks)

c) Peter bought Samsung TV set with his share of the profit. If each TV set cost
Kshs.13680. How many sets did he buy. (4mks)

18(a) A straight line L1 has its y-intercept at y = -2. The line meets the x-axis at point R. If
the x-intercept is 1, determine the equation of L1. (3mks)

(b) A second line L2 meets L1 at R at an angle of 90o. Find the equation of L2 in the
form ax + by = c where a, b and c are constants. (2mks)

(c) A third line L3 passes through (2, 5) and is parallel to L1. Find:
(i) The equation L3 in the form y = mx + c where m and c are constants. (2mks)

(ii) The co-ordinates of T, the point of intersection of L3 and L2. (3mks)

19. Nairobi and Eldoret are 600km apart. At 9:20 a.m. a lorry left Eldoret for Nairobi at a
speed of 60km/h. At 10:00 a.m., a car left Eldoret for Nairobi at a speed of 120km/h.
After 20 minutes of travel, the car developed a mechanical problem which took
20minutes to repair. The car then continued with the journey at the same speed.
(a) Calculate the time the lorry arrived in Nairobi. (2mks)

(b) Find the time when car arrived Nairobi. (2mks)

(c) Find the time when the car overtook the lorry. (2mks)

(d) Find the distance from Nairobi at the overtaking point. (2mks)

(e) Calculate how far the lorry was from Nairobi when the car reached Nairobi. (2mks)

20. Four towns R, T, K and Q are in such a way that T is 84km due North of R and K is
on a bearing of 295o from R at a distance of 60km. Q is on a bearing of 340o from K

(b) Find using the scale drawing:


(i) The distance of T from K. (2mks)

(ii) The bearing of T from K. (1mk)

(iii) The distance of Q from T. (2mks)

(iv) The compass bearing of T from Q. (1mk)

b) Use the grid provided to draw a histogram representing the distribution (Use the scale 1cm to
represent 5 units on the x-axis and 1cm to represent 1 unit on y-axis. (3mks)

c(i) State the group in which median age lies. (1mk)

(ii) A vertical line drawn through the median age divides the total area of the histogram into two equal
parts. Using this information, estimate the median age. (2mks)

of shs.12,000. Had she bought seven blow dryers and twelve shaving machines she
would have spent sh.20,000 more.
(i) Taking x and y to be the prices of a blow dryer and a shaving machine respectively.
Form a matrix equation to represent this information. (2mks)

(ii) Use P-1 in (a) above to find the cost of each item. (4mks)

(iii) Doris discovered that from another shop the price of a blow dryer is 20% less while
the price of a shaving machine is 10% higher. Calculate how much she would have
saved if she bought the items from the other shop. (2mks)
