GUIDING QUESTION How were Spain and Portugal able to take the lead in discovering new lands?
During the 15th century, European explorers began sailing in new directions. The Portuguese were the first to lead
these explorations by traveling along the West African coast.
In 1420, Portuguese fleets, sponsored by Prince Henry the Navigator, started exploring southward along the western
coast of Africa. They found a new source of gold, and this area became known to Europeans as the Gold Coast.
Portuguese sailors heard stories about a sea route to India around the southern tip of Africa. In 1488, Bartholomeu
Dias reached this tip, later called the Cape of Good Hope, and then returned home. Afterward, Vasco da Gama
sailed around Africa and crossed the Indian Ocean, reaching the coast of India. In May 1498, he arrived at the port
of Calicut. When da Gama returned to Portugal, he made a huge profit from the spices he brought back from
India.
The Portuguese returned to the region to take over the spice trade from Muslim traders. A Portuguese admiral,
Afonso de Albuquerque, set up a port at Goa, India. Later, Albuquerque captured Melaka, an important trading
port on the Malay Peninsula. By doing this, the Portuguese broke the Arab control of the spice trade and gained a
stopover point on their way to the Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands.
A treaty with the local ruler in the Moluccas gave Portugal control of the spice trade. However, the Portuguese only
set up trading posts in India and China because they didn’t have enough resources to fully colonize these regions.
