My grandfather started working as a train driver when he left school and he drove trains all his life. There
weren’t any electric trains then and the trains he drove were old and dirty. He started work at 7 o’clock in the
morning and he didn’t finish until 6 o’clock in the afternoon. Sometimes the train was late and he didn’t even
have a lunch break.

EXERCISE 2

My grandmother was a hairdresser when she was young. She started working as a nurse but the hours were
very long. After my mother was born, my grandmother needed a part-time job and hairdressing was perfect
for her. She always worked from 10 o’clock until 1 o’clock and then she went home to prepare lunch. She says
she really liked it because she enjoyed meeting new people.

EXERCISE 3

I love working there. I became interested in animals when I was younger after my dad gave me a dog. There
are lots of dogs here but now I really like the unusual animals. The most unusual one I’ve ever worked with is
a baby monkey. We rescued her from a small zoo where she didn’t have a very good life. She was unhealthy
and not very confident but she soon got better and now she loves playing with people.

EXERCISE 4

Mike Burnley is 13 and from Manchester in the United Kingdom. When he’s not at school, he works part-time
in an animal home. The home is for animals that are lost or are without homes. Mike works there two
evenings a week and sometimes he helps at the weekends. His main job is cleaning the cages where the
animals live and giving them their food and water. Sometimes, he takes the dogs for a walk or plays with the
cats.

EXERCISE 5

Speaking is difficult for many learners but you don’t have to go to another country. You can chat to people
online. Look for a website where you can find people the same age and with the same interests to talk to.
There’s no easy way to learn a language and hard-working students always learn the most.
