Experiment # 1

Problem Statement: To measure the memory of meaningful and meaningless syllables by

using serial or random recall method.

Introduction:

Write a brief introduction about memory.

Hypothesis:

Memory of meaningful syllables will be better than that of the meaningless syllables.

Variables:

Independent Variable: List of Meaningful and Meaningless Syllables

Dependent Variable: Retention of Meaningful and Meaningless Syllables

Materials:

 Memory drum or exposure board

 Stopwatch
 Paper and Pencil
 List of 15 Meaningless Syllables and List of 15 Meaningful Syllables

Experimenter’s Particulars:

Name: _____________

Age: _______________

Gender: ____________

Education: __________
Subject’s Particulars:

Name: _____________

Age: _______________

Gender: ____________

Education: __________

Experimental Design:

Make necessary arrangements before starting the experiment. Two list of 15 meaningless
syllables and the other of 15 meaningful syllables in the consonant-vowel-consonant series will
be prepared. It should be kept in mind that successive words should not rhyme. Moreover, either
vowels or consonants should not be repeated in the successive words.

The room should be properly lighted, ventilated, and free from distractors (e.g., noise).
Rapport should be built with the subject and informed consent will be taken. The subject will be
informed regarding the objectives and procedure of the experiment. The subject will be first
shown a list of meaningless syllables through exposure board, displaying each word one by one
for about 2 seconds. After the whole list is shown, the subject will be asked to recall all syllables
in order or at random. The time taken by the subject and the number of errors in recalling the
whole list will be recorded on record sheet 1. The procedure will be repeated until all syllables
are recorded correctly. Then the list of 15 meaningful syllables will be shown through the
exposure board following the same procedure. Time and errors for each trial will be recorded on
record sheet 2. After completing the experiment, the subject will be thanked for his/her
cooperation. It will take 25 to 30 minutes to complete this experiment.

Procedure:

Two lists, one of 15 meaningless syllables and the other of 15 meaningful syllables in the
consonant-vowel-consonant series were prepared. The subject was first shown a list of
meaningless syllables through exposure board, displaying each word one by one for about 2
seconds. After the whole list was shown, the subject was asked to recall all the syllables in order
or at random. The inability to recall any syllable was marked as an error. The procedure was
repeated until all the syllables were recalled correctly. When the subject recalled the list of
meaningless syllables correctly, then s/he was shown the list of meaningful syllables by
following the similar procedure.

Results:

Results taken from the subject indicates that the subject took ____ trials to memorize the list of
meaningless syllables. S/he made _______ errors and took ______ seconds on the first trial. The
number of errors and time gradually declined. In the last trial, the subject took _____ seconds
and made no error in recall. However, s/he recalled the list of meaningful syllables without error
in ______ trials. S/he took _______ seconds and made _______ errors in first trial; while in the
last trial, s/he took _______ seconds and made no error in recall. After seeing the results, it can
be concluded that the subject made relatively less errors and the time taken was also lesser in
recalling the list of meaningful syllables than that of meaningless syllables.

Conclusion:

It is evident from the results that the memory of meaningless syllables is better than that of
meaningless syllables.
