CHAPTER 1

Introduction

1.1 About Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)

1.1.1 Brief History of SIWES

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was initiated by the Industrial

Training Fund (ITF) in 1973. The aim was to provide students in tertiary institutions with

hands-on experience related to their field of study, helping them gain practical skills before

completing their academic programs. In the early years, the ITF fully financed the scheme, but

by 1978, the financial burden became too great for the fund to handle alone. As a result, the

Federal Government transferred the management of SIWES in 1979 to the National Universities

Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). However, in

November 1984, the Federal Government returned the oversight and implementation of SIWES

to the ITF, and by July 1985, the ITF had fully resumed control, with the scheme's funding now

coming entirely from the Federal Government.

1.1.2 Aims and Objectives of SIWES

The Industrial Training Funds Policy Document No. 1 of 1973 which established SIWES

outlined the scheme's objectives. The objectives are to:

● Provide an avenue for students in higher institutions of learning to acquire industrial

skills and experiences during their course of study.

● Prepare students for industrial work situations that they are likely to meet after

graduation.
● Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machinery

that may not be available in their institutions.

● Make the transition from school to the world of work easier and enhance students’

contacts for later job placements.

● Provide students with the opportunities to apply their educational knowledge in real work

situations, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice.

My overall goal during my SIWES experience was to gain practical exposure in the field of

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), specifically aligning with my academic

pursuit in Computer Science. By working closely with ICT systems and learning critical skills

like database management, data analysis, and troubleshooting, I aimed to bridge the gap between

theoretical knowledge and practical applications. The experience helped me build essential

technical proficiencies in Excel, SQL, and system administration, which are fundamental for my

future career in data management and IT infrastructure. Additionally, it reinforced my

understanding of how these skills integrate into larger business operations, enhancing both my

professional readiness and long-term career aspirations in the tech industry.

was initially difficult, especially site-specific jargon and protocols. However, over time, I

adapted and learned through hands-on experience and mentorship.

3.4 Lessons Learned

1. Data Entry and Management:

Throughout the SIWES program, I gained hands-on experience in accurately inputting and

managing data, particularly in the admission process. I was responsible for compiling and

inputting lists of successful candidates into the system, ensuring there were no errors in the

students’ records. This process demanded close attention to detail and strong organizational

skills, as even minor inaccuracies could lead to significant administrative issues. For instance,

when handling large volumes of data for admission candidates, I had to develop a systematic

approach to cross-checking names, dates, and scores to ensure the data was correct before it was

sent to the ICT department.

2. Troubleshooting and System Maintenance:

I developed essential skills in troubleshooting and system maintenance, especially during the

exam period. When computer systems encountered sudden faults, I was responsible for

diagnosing and fixing the issues promptly. This involved identifying problems such as

connection failures or system slowdowns, rebooting systems, and sometimes performing

hardware checks. One example was when a student’s exam portal repeatedly crashed during an

important exam; I quickly intervened by troubleshooting the network connection, allowing the

student to resume without losing much time.

3. Practical Use of Microsoft Excel:

I learned how to effectively manipulate and analyze data using Excel, especially in tasks

related to admission data management. Beyond basic data entry, I explored advanced Excel

functions like creating charts for data visualization, sorting and filtering data, and applying

formulas to streamline repetitive tasks. For instance, while compiling data on student admissions,

I used Excel to create dynamic charts that provided a visual representation of the admission

numbers by department, making it easier for my team to interpret the data and make informed

decisions.

4. Fundamentals of SQL:

I acquired basic SQL (Structured Query Language) skills during my training, which enabled

me to manage and query data more efficiently. By learning to write simple SQL queries, I was

able to retrieve specific data from databases, such as pulling up lists of registered students or

checking exam results. For example, using SQL allowed me to quickly access records from a

database of admitted students, and I was able to identify and correct inconsistencies between

different sets of data. This experience helped me understand the importance of database

management in handling large-scale data operations.

5. Teamwork and Collaboration:

The nature of the work in the ICT department required consistent teamwork. Collaborating

with other team members was crucial for solving technical issues and ensuring that the

department ran smoothly during the exam period. For example, when multiple students faced

difficulties logging into their exam portals, I worked closely with my colleagues to resolve the
situation by checking login credentials and resetting passwords. The collective effort of the team

ensured that technical disruptions were minimal, and exams could continue without significant

delays.

6. Adaptability and Problem-Solving:

During my SIWES experience, I demonstrated adaptability, especially in high-pressure

environments like exam weeks, where technical issues could arise unexpectedly. I learned to

think on my feet, troubleshoot under pressure, and deliver quick solutions. For instance, when a

power outage disrupted connectivity in the ICT hall, I had to quickly switch to a backup

generator and re-establish the network connection, ensuring that students could resume their

exams without major setbacks. This experience taught me the importance of staying calm and

focused in unpredictable situations and highlighted my ability to resolve challenges efficiently.

3.5 Recommendations

The SIWES program offers invaluable learning opportunities and should be taken as seriously as

any academic work. It allows students to gain practical experience, exposure, and skills that will

shape them into capable and industrious professionals before or after graduation.

However, to further enhance the program, I recommend the establishment of a more structured

system to assist students in finding placement with companies that align with their field of study.

This would reduce the stress and time spent searching for appropriate internships, as many

students struggle to find suitable placements and often settle for roles unrelated to their

discipline. As a result, they miss out on the essential industry-specific experience that SIWES is

designed to provide.

Additionally, department-based supervisors must maintain active communication with their

students during the SIWES period. Regular check-ins would ensure that students are performing

well and making the most of the program. This approach would not only improve student

development but also strengthen the relationship between the academic institution and the

industry, ensuring a more fruitful collaboration.
