1. INTRODUCTION

Composting organic waste is an excellent practice for recycling and reusing organic materials in
agriculture. It helps to improve soil fertility, enhance water retention, and reduce the need for
chemical fertilizers. It's important to note that the effectiveness of chemical additives in
composting depends on various factors such as the initial composition of the organic waste, the
target crops, and specific soil conditions. The major issue they faced using chemical fertilizers
not only affected the soil but human beings as well. To overcome this problem faced by farmers,
Bio fertilizers came as the solution. It is an eco-friendly method both for the environment and
farmers The Bio fertilizer and biological waste are used to replace the usage of chemical
fertilizers as it does not contain any toxic substance and makes the soil enriched. Fruits,
vegetables, dairy products, grains, bread, unbleached paper napkins, coffee filters, eggshells,
meats, and newspaper can be composted. If it can be eaten or grown in a field or garden, it can
be composted. Items that cannot be composted include plastics, grease, glass, and metals; this
includes plastic utensils, condiment packages, plastic wrap, plastic bags, foil, silverware,
drinking straws, bottles, polystyrene, or chemicals. Items such as red meat, bones, and small
amounts of paper are acceptable, but they take longer to decompose.

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT

Composting has become progressively a popular way and suitable option for recycling the
different organic wastes with economic and environmental profits. However, the design of
composting systems for farmers is limited due to the low information on the basic concepts of
the composting process and how manure characteristics can influence its performance. Plant
development and soil fertility are harmed by chemical fertilizers and aided by organic manure.
Chemical fertilizers are affordable, high in nutritional content, and easily absorbed by plants.
They contain large amounts of organic matter, and many of them can be directly added to the soil
without any risk. The solution that will eliminate the environmental harm of agricultural waste,
and, at the same time, involve this waste in commercial circulation as a valuable raw material for
the production of organic fertilizers. Economic conditions motivating the complete processing of
agricultural waste and the economically profitable use of the products of such processing
(organic fertilizers), the formation of a competitive market for these products (the economic
component of the solution). Technologies and equipment that ensure efficient processing of
waste into useful products on an industrial scale, that are competitive in their consumer qualities
and price (technological component of the solution). Organic fertilizers can therefore be used to
reduce the amount of poisonous compounds (such as nitrates) produced by conventional
fertilizers in vegetables like lettuce. Organic system can improve the quality of leafy vegetables
as well as human health.

3. OBJECTIVES

3.1.1 General Objective

The main goal of this project is to design and implement organic fertilizer production machine
from wastes.

3.1.2 Specific Objectives

In order to meet this project, the following objectives are developed:

 To determine the effect of solid waste compost on crop growth and yield.
 To determine the properties of organic waste compost types in relation to crop and soil
factors.
 To evaluate the effect of compost, application rate, and method on crop production
 To assess the economic benefits of compost application to agricultural land.
To model ad design organic fertilizer production machine.
To develop organic fertilizer production machine prototype.
Design and fabricate organic fertilizer production machine.
4. Research Methodology

The methodology produced to meet the specific objectives of the research is outlined in Figure
4.1, along with the research deliverables.

Figure 1.1 Outline of research methodology and deliverables.

Determination of compost analytical properties was required to assess the variation of compost
properties in different compost types, and to produce understanding of the materials capability to
supply crop essential nutrients and the potential interactions with soil quality parameters.
5. Beneficiaries

This research or project is benefit for urban and rural community. This project is essential for
every society.Organic wastes not only influence soil properties, but also play a great role in the
growth and development of plants and thus improve agricultural productivity.

 Organic wastes such as manure, BW, FW, are good sources of plant nutrients and influence
Chemical properties of soil.
 Maintain long-term soil fertility.
Advantages of Manure: The organic manure is considered better than fertilizers. This is because:
 It enhances the water holding capacity of the soil.
 It makes the soil permeable due to which exchange of gases becomes easy.
 It improves the quality of the soil.
5.1 Expected Product

To implement machine which produces organic fertilizers from waste products. The expected
product from this research or project is organic fertilizer production machine from waste
materials i.eFruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains, bread, unbleached paper
napkins, coffee filters, eggshells, meats, and newspaper can be composted.

5.2 Estimated Budget (450,000 ETB).
