Assignment 1

1. For x > 0, prove that there exist a nutural number m such that m − 1 ≤ x < m.

2. Determine all the limit points of the following sets in R and decide whether the sets
are open or closed ( or neither).
(a) Set of all integers.
1 1
(b) A = {x ∈ R : x = 2n
+ 5m
, m, n ∈ N}.
1
(c) A = {(−1)n + m
: m, n ∈ N}

3. Determine all the limit points of the following sets in R2 and decide whether the
sets are open or closed ( or neither).
(a) A = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : x2 + y 2 < 2}.
(b) B = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : x2 + y 2 ≤ 2}.

4. Prove that the only sets that are both open and closed in R are the empty set and
the set R itself. Is a similar statement true for R2 ?

5. Prove that the interior of a set A in Rn is open in Rn and it is largest open set
contained in A.

6. Let A and B be subsets of Rn . Define C := {a + b : a ∈ A, b ∈ B}. Prove or disprove

the below statements:
(a) If A and B are closed sets, then C is a closed set.
(b) If A is an open set and B is a closed set, then C is an open set.

7. If A is finite subset of Rn then show that only elements of A are adherent points.

8. If A and B are subsets of Rn , prove that (intA)∩(intB) = int(A∩B), and A′ ∪B ′ =

(A ∪ B)′ , where A′ is the set of all accumulation point of A.

9. Consider A = (3, 5), construct an open cover F such that no finite subset of F covers
A.

10. Let A be a closed set and B be a compact set in R. Prove or disprove the below
statements:
(a) A ∩ B is compact.
(b) A ∪ B is compact.

11. Prove that a closed interval J = [a, b] in the real line R is compact. Hint. Consider
G an open covering of J and show that J is covered by a finite subfamily of G.

12. Which of the following subsets of R2 are compact?

(a) {(x, y) : xy = 1}
2 2
(b) {(x, y) : x 3 + y 3 = 1}
(c) {(x, y) : x2 + y 2 < 1}

13. Prove that the set of all open disks in xy-plane centred at (x, x) with radius x(where x
is positive rational number), is a countable covering of the set A = {(x, y) ∈ R2 ; x >
0, y > 0}.

14. Prove that a collection of disjoint open sets in Rn is necessarily countable. Give an
example of disjoint closed sets which is not countable.
