UNIT II

Basic control actions


A controller compares the actual value of output with the
reference input, determines the deviation, and produces a
control signal that will reduce the deviation to zero or to a small
value.

• The manner in which the controller produces the control


signal is called the control action.

• When the measured variable is below the set point, the controller
is ON, error is positive and the output signal has maximum value.

• When the measured variable is above the set point, the controller
is OFF, error is negative and output is zero.

• The range of error is called differential gap.
