INTRODUCTION

3
The Romeo and Juliet (2014) miniseries franchise from the

playwright of Sir William Shakespeare was directed by

Ricardo Donna and produced by Luxvide and Stunt Bros and was

released on January 21, 2014, in Spain.

This miniseries I watched made me appreciate the medieval

period; from the settings to its theme. The medieval

architecture hyped up the theme which has made the series a

little more appreciative. On the contrary, this somehow bore

me to death. The plot was linear; too linear that I cannot

even notice the uprising of its plot. There were too many

unnecessary dialogues that only made the series longer and

more boring. Aside from the part that cringes on me, the

romance was too exaggerated. Pardon my negative review of

its plot but it is just my commentaries regarding this

chosen project. But really, would you want to die just

because you have been separated from a guy you met a day

ago? Seriously, that part made me want to vomit. Additional

to the part where they kissed right after meeting each other

again after an ambush. Forsaken me for I have to say,

SERIOUSLY? THAT’S IT? ARE THEY DON’T HAVE A COMMON SENSE

FROM THE PART THAT THE ONES WHO AMBUSHED THE CAPULETS ARE

THE MONTAGUES???

Furthermore, I appreciate the little effort in the acting.

It was not as satisfying as I thought it would be but to put

it all up, it was good enough. The only thing I did not like

in the series is the plot but who knows? It might be the

4
original playwright’s fault to have this kind of outrageous

plot or it might be also the production’s fault. Really, who

knows? I have not seen the original playwright and I am just

doing this to pass for the sake of my grades. I watched this

kind of movie just for my grades so I hope it will be worth

it.

Additionally, I will not deny the fact that its medieval

period theme hyped me up. The castle structure, the seasons,

and especially the costumes. Those are the things that I can

only compliment wholeheartedly because that is what I really

mean. I liked how they executed the things in the settings

perfectly, and to mention the part about how they included a

public play which was natural and historically accurate.

Plus the part of the public execution.

To end this introduction where my ideas are detailed, I will

repeatedly say that it is really boring so I am so sorry,

Sir Shakespeare. For the sake of my grades, I will put all

of my heart into debating that it is not so appreciative

kind of a plot to watch. I will add another comment which is

entirely nonsensical just to occupy the space below before I

start on another page. Were you going to read this? I hope

not. Thus, it concludes the ideas of the miniseries.

SUMMARY

6
Here comes my summarization of the miniseries I watched,

Romeo and Juliet.

First things first, the background of the story.

The miniseries is a franchise movie by the playwright

written by William Shakespeare in 1597. This tragic

play is caused by the feud between the Montagues and

Capulets, the two main families in the play as well as

in the movie. For the unknown root of their never-

ending feud, it was told that the bloodshed was

continuous even before Juliet and Romeo were born.

One evening, a masked group of vendettas ambushed

Juliet’s convoy which caused havoc. One masked guy

tried to capture Juliet forcefully for the reason of

she’ll be his trophy but another masked guy came up and

saved Juliet, it was Romeo. This is where the tragic

love story of two young teenagers started. They told

themselves that it was love at first sight and they

crave it.

Another evening came when the second meet-up of the two

happened. It was the time when a Montague gate crashes

the engagement party of a Capulet to Count Paris. The

lovesick Romeo came with his best friend, Mercutio, to

the ball and ask him to help him find the woman of his

7
dreams. On the other side, there was Juliet. Juliet’s

sister, Ursula, was the one who was getting engaged yet

when Count Paris saw her, he changed his mind and ask

for Juliet’s hand instead. And because of that, Ursula

grew hateful towards her sister. At the dance, when

Count Paris asked Juliet to dance with him, that’s when

Romeo and Juliet saw each other again. Their hearts

desire to dance with each other but there were eyes all

over them. Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, was agitated and

heedful toward Romeo because he knows that he is a

Montague. On Juliet’s part, there was this annoying

Count Paris who keeps on bugging her.

After the dance, the two young teenagers came to a

place inside the Capulet Castle where they share their

first kisses.

The meeting continuously happened. Even Juliet’s

nursing mother was conspiring with this outrageous

romantic yet tragic love story.

Secondly, the setting.

The series was set in Verona, Italy, just like the

setting it has in the original play.

8
The characters.

Romeo and Juliet are the main protagonists of the

series. Two teenagers who fell in love with each other

despite belonging to feuding families, Montague and

Capulet. They were the ones who thought that their love

is the cure for the never-ending sickness of cruelty

among their families. Yet in the end, they both died

for they want to have each other even if it’s with

death.

The Montagues. A family of brave who is born with no

mercy, that’s how they were raised by their parents.

Romeo was a Montague heir and swore to defeat their

enemies and will reign among the families.

The Capulets. A family of kindness but with cruelty.

Juliet belongs to this family and was cherished by her

nurse because of how kind and warm she is. Her beauty

is already one of a kind and still added with a warm

heart. The only one I hated in the Capulets is their

mother, Lady Capulet, who is cruel and cold towards her

children. She put up first her ambition to reign than

the feelings of her children. At first, I thought she

was only favored by Ursula yet in the end when Count

Paris dumped Ursula, she did the same. Also

CONCLUSION

To conclude this movie using my own words to make

commentaries, I will restate the fact that I did not like

how its plot came to be. The boredom I felt while watching

and the creases in my forehead every time I cringe at every

word they are telling each other especially when they said

that death would be much better if they separated. Like,

seriously? That’s how lovesick you all became after meeting

someone for days? And because of that words they told, they

literally ended up dead.

I would like to recommend this series to everyone who seeks

someone they have the same personality. Are you as lovesick

as they are? Well, you came to watch the right movie for

you. But disclaimer, don’t end up dead like they were.

Also, I would like you to read the play first to lessen the

confusion while watching this. There are some scenes that

were not included in the movie but originally, they should

be there. Although I, as well, did not read the book first.
