II- MINI LESSON: (40 MINUTES)

How to Find the Least Common Denominator?

In order to find the least common denominator, we can opt for either of the ways as
given below:

1) List the multiples of both denominators . For example, 2/5 and 1/6. The multiples of
5 are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, ... and the multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36,
42, …. Thus, the least common denominator will be 30 and the fractions will be
12/30 and 5/30 (by taking LCM)

2) Multiply both the denominators. For example, 3/4 and 2/x. Here, the two
denominators, 4 and x don't have any common multiple as such. Thus, we will
multiply both the denominators. Thus, the least common denominator will be
4x and the fractions will be 3x/4x and 8/4x.

How to solve rational algebraic equations transformable to quadratic equation?

To solve rational algebraic equation that is transformable to quadratic equation,

multiply the least common denominator to the both sides of the equation, then transform the
resulting equation to standard form ax2+bx+c=0 where a≠ 0. You can use any method that
you know to solve the quadratic equation. The examples below are solved using factoring.

Illustrative example:

x2-3x-8x+24=0
x2-11x+24=0

x-8=0 x-3=0
x=8 x=3

x2-2x+8=x-2+4x
x2-2x-x-4x+2+8=0
x2-7x+10=0
(x-5) (x-2) = 0
x-5=0 x-2=0
x=5 x=2
On number 2, since the root 2 when replaced to the original equation will yield to
undefined, the root 2 is called an extraneous root of the rational algebraic equation.

the number and three. Find all such numbers.

Let x be the number.

2(x+2)

14= (x-3) (x+2)

14= x2-x-6
x2-x-6=14
x2-x-20=0
(x-5) (x+4) = 0
x-5=0 x+4=0
x=5 x=-4
Therefore, the two numbers are 5 and -4.
