1. Work in pairs. Discuss the questions
a) Who are the most famous writers in Ecuador's history? What did they write?
The most famous writers in my country were:
Jorge Icaza: One of the most renowned writers in Ecuador, author of the famous novel
Huasipungo, which describes the exploitation of indigenous people on Ecuadorian farms,
denouncing social injustice.
Juan Montalvo: An essayist and novelist who stood out for his critical and political works, such
as Siete Tratados and Catilinarias, where he criticized corrupt governments and defended
freedom.
José Joaquín de Olmedo: A poet and politician, known for his Canto a Bolívar, an epic ode
dedicated to the liberator Simón Bolívar, celebrating the independence of Latin America.
Medardo Ángel Silva: A modernist poet, part of the so-called Decapitated Generation, author
of romantic and melancholic poems such as El alma en los labios and Tú me quieres blanca.

b) What Shakespeare plays or characters can you name? What do you know about them?
Some of Shakespeare's plays and characters were:
Romeo and Juliet: Which was a tragic romance between two young lovers from feuding
families.
Hamlet: This play focuses on Prince Hamlet who seeks revenge for the murder of his father.
Macbeth: A tragedy about ambition and power, where Macbeth, a Scottish general, murders the
king to become ruler.
Othello: This play explores themes of jealousy and betrayal as Othello, a Moorish general, is
manipulated by Iago.
A Midsummer Night's Dream: A comic play that mixes love, magic and confusion in a forest.

2. Read the article. Work in pairs. According to the author, why are Shakespeare's plays
still so popular today?
Shakespeare remains popular today because of his complex and realistic characters, which
explore human nature in a universal and timeless way, allowing viewers to identify with them.
Furthermore, his use of language, both poetic and concise, has left phrases and expressions that
are still used today. His influence on English culture and the language is immense, with many
of his observations on life and human emotions still resonating in modern society.

3. Read the article again and answers the questions in pairs.


a) What adjective describes what England was like in Shakespeare’s time? (Para 1)

Shakespeare brought lifelike characters with personalities that people could relate to

The nurse puts practical considerations before romance
e) Which adverb means that Shakespeare was good ay expressing ideas in just a few words?

f) What verb tells you that Shakespeare created new words and expressions?

1. Work stress is a just a fact of life these days you have to learn to deal with it.
Fact of life: This refers to something that is a normal, unavoidable part of life. In this case, work
stress is being described as something that everyone has to deal with at some point, so it's considered
a "fact of life."
2. The conference was attended by people from all walks of life writers, students, businessmen.
Walks of life: This phrase refers to different backgrounds, professions, or social classes that people
come from. At the conference, there were people from various professions or "walks of life," such as
writers, students, and business people.
3. My son was worried about going to college, but now he's having the time of his life.
Having the time of his life: is used to describe a time when someone is having a great time or having
an exceptionally good experience. It's like saying that that person is going through one of the best
moments of their life.
4. Thank you for taking me to the station; it was a real life-saver. I would have missed the train.
Life-saver: This is used to describe someone or something that helps you out of a difficult situation. In
this case, the driver helped the person make it to the train station on time, preventing them from missing
their train, so they are described as a "life-saver."
