Title:
Structural analysis of triangular truss when point load is applied
on top edge at point D.
Objective:
A. Bending moment diagram along path E to F
B. Shear force along path E to F
C. Total deformation on truss structure
D. Deformation on link EF
Apparatus:
Ansys Workbench 18.1
Theory:
When a point load is applied at point D, it will create a reaction force at the
supports and induce bending moments and shear forces in various sections of
the truss. The bending moment diagram (BMD) along the path from E to F
illustrates how the bending moment varies as you move along the truss,
showing the points where maximum or zero bending moments occur. Shear
forces, which represent the internal forces acting perpendicular to the truss
members, are calculated along this path to understand how the load is
transmitted through the structure. These diagrams help engineers assess the
structural integrity of the truss and ensure that the members are appropriately
sized to resist bending and shear.
The total deformation of the truss structure is a critical factor in assessing the
overall stability of the design. When a point load is applied, each member of the
truss experiences elongation or compression based on the internal forces. The
total deformation is the sum of the individual deformations of each member,
which can be calculated using the material properties (like Young's Modulus)
and the dimensions of the members. The deformation provides insight into how
much the entire structure will displace under the applied load, which is crucial
for ensuring that the structure will not exceed its design limits.
The deformation of individual links, such as the member EF, is also important in
understanding the localized behaviour of the truss. The elongation or
compression of link EF under the applied load can affect the overall alignment
and stability of the truss, particularly if excessive deformation occurs.
Procedure:
1) Open Ansys workbench, drag the static structural module
into the project schematic.
2) Select the material of the object as structural steel.
3) Right click on the geometry to open the design modular.
Select the units in mm.
4) Sketch the required triangular truss shape with give the link
AB of 50 mm length, the angle between AB and AD is 45, FC
and FE 45, FC and CE is 90, AB and DB is also 45 degrees.
5) Make them lines from sketches.
6) Make the lines of truss of tubular cross-section. The inner
radius of the cross-section if 0.1mm and the outer radius is
0.2mm.
7) Open the model section and generate mesh.
8) Insert a fixed support at point C located on the base link of
the truss.
9) Insert a displacement of 10mm in x direction at edge A and
B.
10) Make a new coordinate system at point D. Than move the
coordinate system and make 30 degrees of angle from x axis.
Apply a force of 400N in that coordinate in x axis at point D.
