Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Alabama, USA. She became
deaf and blind at two years of age due to some illness. Captain Arthur
Keller and Kate Adams Keller were her parents.
Helen first went to the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston, where
she learned to communicate.
She later attended the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf in New
York to improve her speech.
Helen was determined, brave, and hardworking. She didn’t give up,
even when things were tough.
Helen's first book, The Story of My Life, talks about her early life and
how she learned to communicate.
She also wrote The World I Live In about her experiences as a deaf-
blind person, and Out of the Dark about social issues.
Annie helped Helen learn language, read books, and understand the
world around her. Without Annie’s help, Helen might not have
achieved all that she did.
When Helen was about 7 years old, Annie Sullivan took her to the
water pump and spelled "W-A-T-E-R" into her hand as water flowed
over it.
That moment was the breakthrough when Helen realized that the
letters spelled into her hand represented the word "water." This
helped her understand that everything had a name.
