Discuss the disparity in educational technology advancement in schools of

industrialized First World Country (such as the US, England, Japan, Singapore,
Australia and a still developing country , namely the Philippines.

Technology in schools is a practical instrument to reinforce the learning of

the students. It is commonly associated today with industrialized countries. In
contrast, developing countries have been struggling to cope with these
advancements, like the Philippines, for instance. There is a wide discrepancy in
terms of accessibility, infrastructure, and resources.

As what I have witnessed in our country, we are very far left behind by
those industrialized first-world countries in terms of technology utilization in
schools. Firstly, industrialized countries have schools that have better access to
electricity, rapid internet connectivity, and modern equipment. Digital devices
such as laptops, tablets, and smart boards are often accessible to most
classrooms. Secondly, cloud-based learning platforms such as Google
Classroom, for instance, are also common and accessible to students. Thirdly,
students have an easy access to online resources given the fact that they have
stable internet. Lastly, their education is highly digitized, meaning superior
technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual classrooms are
integrated into their curriculum. On the contrary, many of the public schools in the
Philippines, specifically those that are situated in rural regions, encounter
frequent problems like unstable internet connections or, worse, absolutely no
signal, inconsistent electricity flow, and a lack of advanced digital devices such
as LED TVs and printers. Due to the scarcity of digital devices and other
resources, teachers may rely on traditional teaching methods. As what I have
remembered from the pandemic, most schools in our local area used the
modular method, especially those in remote areas that are far from the town
proper. Meanwhile, those who are inside the vicinity of the town proper are
privileged enough to choose whether online or modular learning. We are still

lucky enough to have access to printed materials during that era to alleviate the
hindrance of teaching, as teachers are distant to their students, inadequate of a
proper teaching and learning experience. As a developing country, we may not
have that advanced and superior technology, but as a matter of fact, we are
slowly but surely having control over the accessibility of various technological
resources as we enter the realm of the digital era.

In conclusion, despite the discrepancy between the technology among the

industrialized and developing countries, the Philippines is on its own level,
providing accessible technological resources that it can offer just for the sake of
education. It is up to the teachers, as the quality of education depends upon their
hands and the right utilization of technology to reinforce the learning process of
the students.

Reflection:

Given the lack of resources in our rural areas in the Philippines, what
media can still be used for effective learning in schools?

Scarcity of resources, especially in the rural regions of the Philippines, is

quite common. However, despite the inadequacy, by looking at the silver lining,
there are still media that can be utilized to support an effective learning process.
Television is a common medium in the Philippines, even in remote areas. With
this medium, teachers can project various visual media, such as pictures,
presentations, and videos, to enhance the learning process. Moreover, mobile
phones can also be utilized for effective learning in rural areas. As I have
remembered from the news, each household in the Philippines has at least one
mobile phone. Despite the lack of internet connectivity, the basic features of
mobile phones can still be used for educational purposes. For instance, we can
share files such as pictures, videos, documents, audio, or applications through
Bluetooth for the students to utilize these later wherever they are, for it is
accessible offline. Lastly, print media are also extensive, even in rural areas; it is
still one of the most effective forms of media to deliver and disseminate
knowledge to students. It includes books, magazines, and printed materials. This
is commonly observed during the pandemic, where education suddenly shifted to
modular learning. We can see the success of dispersion of knowledge and
information through modules that are distributed to students. Until now, we can
still observe numerous books and printed materials circulating to provide reliable
sources of information to students.

Answer the following:

1. Describe the 21st century learners compared with the learners of the
yesteryears. (5 pts)

The learners from the 21st century are very distinct compared to those
learners from yesteryear. The 21st century learners have access to a huge
amount of information through smart devices, the internet, and other digital tools.
They can quickly access the internet and surf educational contents to gather
information, unlike learners from yesteryear, when information was limited
because it was only provided by books, libraries, and inside the classroom.
Learning before also relied on teachers, which required more effort and time,
causing students to depend on the teacher as the source of information.

2. Enumerate at least 5 teaching methods/strategies applied in the 21 st century.

(5 pts.)

There are various teaching methods that are applied in the 21 st century.
Firstly, it includes blended learning, which is a combination of traditional face-to-
face instruction with online learning components. Students engage with digital
tools and resources, such as virtual classrooms, learning management systems
(LMS), and multimedia content, while still benefiting from the guidance of the
teacher physically. Moreover, flipped classroom is also introduced; this approach
includes the teacher providing materials outside the classroom, such as videos,
documents, or other digital resources, and using the class time for activities,
discussion, and collaboration based on the materials provided beforehand.
Furthermore, project-based learning (PBL) is also applied in the 21 st century.
Students spend a lot of time working on projects or issues from the real world.
The emphasis is on creating a final product or presentation by conducting
research, coming up with solutions, and using interdisciplinary skills. In addition,
gamification is a common method that is utilized as well. Incorporating aspects of
game design into instructional activities to involve students. Both physical and
digital games increase engagement and enjoyment in the learning process.
Lastly, collaborative learning is a method where students work together in groups
or teams to solve problems, complete tasks, or explore topics. This method
emphasizes cooperation, communication, and shared responsibility for learning
outcomes.
3. In 3 to 5 sentences, discuss the 21st century teacher.

A teacher in the twenty-first century facilitates learning by helping pupils

hone their creative, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. They embrace
technology and use digital platforms and tools to design individualized and
interactive learning experiences. These educators emphasize collaborative and
practical applications, preparing their pupils for a connected and rapidly evolving
global society. They also constantly adjust to new teaching methods,
technologies, and educational trends since they are lifelong learners themselves.
Educators also adapt to changes, especially amongst students, given that they
are diverse; they promote inclusivity and encourage students in all aspects by
treating them equally despite their differences.

4. Write a simple paragraph on “What kind of teacher I will be?”

Being a future teacher is a thing that I am uncertain of. However, if I am

fortunate enough to become one, I reckon that I can imagine myself being kind
and generous to all of my students. Being considerate to all because I am open-
minded, I consider aspects and factors that affect the situation of the child. I am
passionate about teaching, and of course, I will be friendly to my fellow teachers
in the faculty. I will be utilizing technology given that we are in the realm of the
great technological advent. I will use the maximum potential of all the digital tools
I can use to provide the necessary learning that a student needs. I will correct the
misconceptions of my students and teach them values and philosophies that I
can inculcate into their minds. I will make the classroom fun, and I will address
the problems accordingly and appropriately in order to make the school like a
sanctuary, where students are safe and sound, secure from all danger. Lastly, I
will give them the unconditional love that they deserve, the hope that they need,
and the peace that they want.
