Understanding the

Computer
•What type of computer
do you have in home and
what type of operating
system does it have?
The Computer
•computer is a device that
accepts information in the
form of digitalized data, and
manipulates it for some result
based on a program or
sequence of instructions on
how the data is to be
processed.
The Computer
•Is an electronic device use
to manipulate data so that
useful information can be
generated.
•It has the ability to store,
retrieve, and process data.
Brief History of Computer
•The computer we know
today is the result of various
improvements made since
the 19 century by an
th
English mathematics
professor named Charles
Babbage.
Charles Babbage
•is considered
by some to be
"father of the
computer"
Charles Babbage
•Created the difference
engine and analytical
engine.
Difference Engine
• Funded by the
British
government, the
project, called
the "Difference
Engine" fails
due to the lack
of technology at
the time,
Difference Engine
•Charles Babbage conceives
of a steam-driven
calculating machine that
would be able to compute
tables of numbers.
Analytical engine
• is a machine, first
proposed by
Charles Babbage
in 1837, that is
considered to be
the concept for
the first general
mechanical
computer.
Analytical engine
•The design featured an ALU
(arithmetic logic unit) and
permitted basic
programmatic flow control
Ada Augusta Byron
• According to Anna Siffert, a
professor of theoretical
mathematics at the University of
Münster in Germany, Ada
Lovelace writes the first program
while translating a paper on
Babbage's Analytical Engine from
French into English.
Analytical engine
• Augusta Ada
Lovelace is known
as the first
computer
programmer
• She was the first to
recognize that the
machine had
applications
beyond pure
calculation.
Atanasoff-Berry Computer(ABC)
•The first
digital
computer in
1937.
Atanasoff-Berry Computer(ABC)
•The Atanasoff Berry Computer,
later named the ABC, was built
at Iowa State University from
1939-1942 by physics professor
Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff and
his graduate student, Clifford
Berry.
Colossus
•In 1943, a
computer
called Colossus
was Built for
the Military.
Colossus
• Colossus was a set of computers
developed by British codebreakers
in the years 1943–1945 to help in
the cryptanalysis of the Lorenz
cipher. Colossus used thermionic
valves to perform Boolean and
counting operations.
Colossus
Harvard Mark I
• was one of the
earliest general-
purpose
electromechani
cal computers
used in the war
effort during
the last part of
World War II.
ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator
and Computer)
• The machine is the
first "automatic,
general-purpose,
electronic, decimal,
digital computer by
, John William
Mauchly and John
Adam Presper
Eckert
UNIVAC(Universal Automatic
Computer)
• the first commercial
computer for business
and government
applications, Mauchly
and Presper leave the
University of
Pennsylvania and
receive funding from
the Census Bureau to
build the UNIVAC
•Over the course of 1947 to
1962, the computer was
introduced to the public and
programming language
were then develop.
Grace Hopper
• develops the first
computer language,
which eventually
becomes known as
COBOL, which
stands for
COmmon, Business-
Oriented Language
•Since 1963, the computers
started becoming smaller
and more powerful.
Kenbak-1
• The Kenbak-1,
released in early
1971, is
considered by the
Computer History
Museum to be the
world's first
personal
computer.
Altair 8800
• The MITS Altair
was first personal
computer based on
the Intel 8080
general-purpose
microprocessor, and
the first personal
computer to get
"wide notice"
among enthusiasts.
MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating
System)
•The PC we
know today is
introduced in
1980 from MS-
DOS
Apple Lisa
• The Apple Lisa,
standing for "Local
Integrated Software
Architecture" but also
the name of Steve
Jobs' daughter is the
first personal
computer to feature a
GUI.The machine also
includes a drop-down
menu and icons
Apple Macintosh
• 1984:The Apple
Macintosh is
announced to the
world during a
Superbowl
advertisement. The
Macintosh is
launched with a
retail price of
$2,500
World Wide Web
• Tim Berners-Lee, a
British researcher at the
European Organization
for Nuclear Research
submits his proposal for
what would become the
World Wide Web. His
paper details his ideas for
Hyper Text Markup
Language (HTML), the
building blocks of the
Web.
Pentium
•1993:The
Pentium
microprocessor
advances the
use of graphics
and music on
PCs.
Google
• Google was
officially launched
in 1998 by Larry
Page and Sergey
Brin to market
Google Search,
which has
become the most
used web-based
search engine..
Types of Computers
Four Types of Computers
1. Microcomputer
2. Mini Computer
3. Mainframe Computer
4. Super Computer
Microcomputer
Most widely used and fastest
growing type of computer.
Desktop computers, laptops,
tablets, and smartphones are
types of microcomputers.
Microcomputer
Minicomputer
• Also known as midrange
computers. It features all the
functions of a large size computer,
but has a smaller size.
• Minicomputers can support many
users because of its multi-
processing system.
Minicomputer
Mainframe Computer
Large and expensive computer
capable of handling thousands of
users and programs
simultaneously.
Mainframe Computer
Supercomputer
Most powerful and most advance
in terms of performance and
data processing.
