Science Lab: Exploring Measurements
Topic: Measurements (Mass, Weight, Volume, Density, Temperature)
Objective: Students will learn to use various laboratory apparatus to accurately measure mass,
weight, volume, density, and temperature. By the end of this lab, students will be able to
understand the differences between these measurements and apply them in real-world
scenarios.
Materials Needed
Triple beam balance (for mass measurement)
Electronic scale (for weight measurement)
Graduated cylinder (for volume measurement)
Beaker (for volume measurement)
Thermometer (for temperature measurement)
Water (for experiments involving volume and density)
Salt (for density experiment)
Cubes of different materials (for density experiment)
Ruler (for measuring dimensions of cubes)
Science notebook and pen for recording observations
Procedures:
Part 1: Measuring Mass and Weight
1. Mass Measurement:
o Each group should use the triple beam balance to measure the mass of the
following objects:
i. Science notebook
ii. A ballpen
o Record the mass in grams in the data sheet.
2. Weight Measurement:
o Use the formula W =mg to measure the weight of each measured object.
o Record the weight in newtons in the data sheet.
Part 2: Measuring Volume
3. Volume of Liquid:
o Using the graduated cylinder, measure 50 mL of water.
o Pour the water into a beaker and measure the volume again.
o Record the volume in milliliters in the data sheet.
4. Volume of an Irregular Object:
o Measure the volume of the ballpen by water displacement method.
o Record the volume in milliliters in the data sheet.
5. Volume of a Solid Object:
o Measure the dimensions of the science notebook using a ruler (length, width,
height).
o Calculate the volume using the formula: V =l × w ×h .
o Record the calculated volume in cubic centimeters.
Part 3: Measuring Temperature
6. Temperature Measurement:
o Use the thermometer to measure the temperature of the water in the beaker.
o Record the temperature in degrees Celsius in the science notebook.
o Convert the measured temperature (C) to degrees Fahrenheit and Kelvin scale.
Part 4: Calculating Density
7. Density Calculation:
mass
o For each object measured, calculate the density using the formula: D= .
volume
o Record the density in grams per milliliters ( mLg ).
