ELECTRONICS

( Special Science Class - Elective )

Quarter 4 – Module 1

( Week 1 and 2 )

Resistor Color Coding

i
MODULE 1 ( Week 1 and 2 ) RESISTOR COLOR CODING

Resistor Color Coding uses colored bands to quickly identify a resistors resistive value
and its percentage of tolerance with the physical size of the resistor indicating its wattage rating.
The four band color code is the most common variation. These resistors have two bands for the
resistance value, one multiplier and one tolerance band.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. List down the different colors use in resistor color coding.

2. Compute the resistance value of the resistor using its color.
3. Calculate its multiplier and tolerance, and
4. Draw a sample of a four band resistor with label.

What I Need To Know ?

Holding the resistor with the gold or silver band to the right and read the color
codes from the left to the right. Select the color codes from the bands on the resistor. Read
the colors from left to right. The resistance value based on the color code provided is now
displayed.

In this lesson, as you work on with the activity, you will be able to answer the following
key questions:

What are the different colors in resistor color coding? and

Identify its multiplier and tolerance ?

Before you start with the Lesson, be sure to answer the pre – assessment.

What’s In?

Resistor Color Coding uses colored bands to quickly identify a resistors resistive
value and its percentage of tolerance with the physical size of the resistor indicating its wattage
rating. The colors brown, red, green, blue, and violet are used as tolerance codes on 5-
band resistors only.

What’s New?

ACTIVITY 1

Computing the Value of resistor using its Color

Objectives:

1. Identify the different colors of resistor, and

2. Compute the value using its color.

Materials:

Paper , One fourth size cartolina

Ball Pen , Pentel Pen

3
Eraser , One fourth size illustration board

Procedure:

1. In a half size illustration board, divide it into two.

2. In the first half or in the left side of an illustration board, Draw the pictorial
diagram of the resistor and label its color.
3. In the second half or in the right side give the value of the resistor. . .

Observation / Conclusion:

1. What are the different colors of the resistor ?

2. What color that has a tolerance ?

Generalization:

1. What are the steps in computing the value of the resistor ?

What is It?

Computing the Resistance Value of the Resistor

4
Based on the example above, the color of the 4 band resistor is red, yellow , orange
and gold. Upon looking at the chart red is the first color and it should be referred to as the first
digit having 2 , yellow is the second color and it should be referred to as the second digit which
has 4. Then orange is the third color should be referred to in the fourth column or multiplier
which has 1000 or multiply by 1000 and lastly is the fourth color which is gold so it should be
referred to in the fifth column which is tolerance that has ± 5%. The third column is not included
or never mind for it because we have four color resistor or 4 – band resistor. The final answer
now is 24,000 Ω ±5% or 24K Ω ±5%. To get the 5% simply multiply by 0.05. Therefore the
tolerance of the 24,000 Ω ± 5% resistor is 1,200 Ω.

5
First color = Blue =6
Second color = Red =2
Third color = Black =1
Fourth color = Gold = ±5%

To get the final answer we have 62 X 1 ( because 1 is multiplier ) = 62 Ω ±5%

What I Have Learned?

Directions: Write only the letter that corresponds to the correct answer. Write your

C. It is composed of a circuit.
D. It is only a component.

6
2. How much is the tolerance of a 250 Ω ±3% resistor ?
A. 7.5 ohms B. 7.5 volts C. 7.5 watts D. 8.0 ohms
3. Which of the following does not belong to the group?
A. Blue B. Brown C. Gold D. Pink
4. How much is the resistance value of the resistor having a color of red, brown, red, silver ?
A. 2,100 ohms ±1% C. 2, 100 ohms ±3%
B. 2,100 ohms ± 2% D. 2,100 ohms ± 4%
.

What I Need To Know

7
A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical
resistance as a circuit element. In electronic circuits, resistors are used to reduce current flow,
adjust signal levels, to divide voltages, bias active elements, and terminate transmission lines,
among other.

What’s In

The resistor's resistance, limits the flow of electrons through a circuit. They are
passive components, meaning they only consume power (and can't generate it). Resistors are
usually added to circuits where they complement active components like op-amps,
microcontrollers, and other integrated circuits.

9
How to Identify the Color of the Resistor

Generally, the resistance value, tolerance, and wattage rating are printed on the body of
a resistor as numbers or letters when the resistors body is big enough to read the print, such as
large power resistors.

But when a resistor is smaller (example: 1/4 watt carbon or film type), the print is too small to
read, so the specifications must be shown in another way.

450 ohms ±2% = ( Yellow, Green, Brown, Red )

2,830 ohms ±5% = ( Red, Gray, Orange, Brown, Gold )

Yellow
Green Brown Red
Red Gray Orange Brown Gold
