Exam paper

Signal and System (UESTC 2026)

Date: June 29th 2023
Time: 14:30-16:30PM

Attempt all PARTS. Total 100 marks

Use one answer sheet for each of the questions in this exam.
Show all work on the answer sheet.

Make sure that your University of Glasgow and UESTC Student Identification
Numbers are on all answer sheets.

An electronic calculator may be used provided that it does not allow text storage
or display, or graphical display.

All graphs should be clearly labelled and sufficiently large so that all elements
are easy to read.

The numbers in square brackets in the right-hand margin indicate the marks
allotted to the part of the question against which the mark is shown. These
marks are for guidance only.

Q1 Consider the system shown in Figure Q1-1 ,where the frequency response H ( j ) has
the magnitude and phase response shown in Figure Q1-2. x1 (t )  sin(1000 t ) and
x2 (t )  2 cos(2000t ) are the two input signals of this system.

(a) Determine whether x(t )  x1 (t )  x2 (t ) is periodic signal. If yes, give its period.
[5]

(b) Determine the Fourier series coefficient ak of x1 (t ) . [5]

(c) Determine the Fourier Transform X 2 ( j ) of x2 (t ) and sketch the spectrum of

x2 (t ) [6]

(d) Determine the output response y (t ) of this system. [4]

(e) If x3 (t )  x1 (t )* x2 (t ) is sampled by the impulse train p (t )    (t  nT )
n 

and the sampled signal is y3 (t ) . Determine the sampling period T which

would guarantee x3 (t ) can be recovered from y3 (t ) . [5]

Q2 Signal x(t ) which spectrum is shown in Figure Q2-1 is modulated by the carrier signal
c(t )  cos 6 t , xˆ (t ) is the modulated signal. xˆ (t ) is also the input signal to system S
and corresponding output signal is y (t ) . The structure of the system is shown in Figure
Q2-2.

(c) Draw the system’s block diagram in direct form. [4]

(d) If the input x(t )  e t u (t ) , determine the output signal y (t ) . [8]
