FIRST SEMESTER B.TECH. EXAMINATIONS – FEBRUARY-MARCH 2022
SUBJECT : MAT 1151/ MAT_1151: ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS – I (PHYSICS GROUP) (DTQ)
Friday, March 04, 2022
Time: 10:30 – 12:30 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 40
PART – B

1A. Solve (4𝑥𝑦 + 3𝑦 2 − 𝑥)𝑑𝑥 + 𝑥(𝑥 + 2𝑦)𝑑𝑦 = 0 with y(2)=2 .

𝑥3
1B. Solve (𝑥 2 𝐷2 + 𝑥𝐷 − 1)𝑦 = 1+𝑥 2 .
(4 + 6 = 10 marks)

2A. Obtain 𝑓(𝑥) as a polynomial in 𝑥 using Newton’s divided difference formula for the following
data. Then calculate value of 𝑓(𝑥) at 𝑥 = 0.5.
𝑥 0 1 2 3
𝑓(𝑥) 3 6 12 15
2B. Given 2𝑑𝑦 − 6𝑥𝑑𝑥 = 𝑦𝑑𝑥, 𝑦(0) = 1. Compute 𝑦(0.4) correct up to fourth decimal place by
taking h = 0.2 using Runge- Kutta fourth order method and also calculate the value of y(0.4)
by analytical method.
(4+6 = 10 marks)

3A. Using Gauss-Seidel iteration method, find the solution of the following system of equations.
Carry out 2 iterations by taking the initial approximation as (1, −1, 2, −1). Correct to two
decimal places.
−𝑥1 + 7𝑥3 + 2𝑥4 = 18
6𝑥1 + 𝑥2 − 3𝑥3 = −5
4𝑥1 − 8𝑥2 − 𝑥3 + 2𝑥4 = 15
−5𝑥3 + 8𝑥4 = −23
1 𝑑𝑥 3
3B. Evaluate ∫0 4𝑥+5 using Simpson’s 8 𝑡ℎ rule taking ℎ = 0.2.

1 1 3
3C. Using Gauss-Jordan method, find the inverse of the matrix 𝐴 = [ 1 3 −3] and hence
−2 −4 −4
𝑥 −4
−1
using 𝐴 find the solution to the system of equations 𝐴𝑋 = 𝐵, where 𝑋 = [𝑦] and 𝐵 = [ 6 ].
𝑧 2
(4+2+4 = 10 marks)

4A. Evaluate 𝑦(0.1) correct to five decimal places by using Taylor’s series method considering
𝑑𝑦
series terms up to fourth degree if y(x) satisfies 𝑑𝑥 = 𝑥𝑦 + 1 , 𝑦(0) = 1.
4B. Test whether the set 𝑊 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) ; 𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟𝑠} is a subspace of ℝ3 or
not.
4C. Construct an orthonormal set of vectors in ℝ3 from the set of linearly independent vectors
𝐵 = {(1,1,1), (1,2,3), (2, −1,1)}.
