EE 1105/1305 – Intro to Electrical and Computer Engineering

Lab_2 – Angle Sensor Laboratory

Semester: Spring 2024

Name: Juan Flores Group:_____________

IMPORTANT - READ CAREFULLY: Lab questions are now broken into PRE-LAB, LAB, and POST-
LAB components. Please go to the EE1305 website and read the lab procedure, and complete
all of the PRE-LAB sections, BEFORE coming to the lab.

PRE-LAB PROCEDURE
Pre-Lab - Question 1: In the instructions it was explained that the angle sensor Check
(variable resistor) can be modeled as two resistors in series, connected to
power/ground and measured in the middle between them. Sketch the circuit as two
resistors, label the voltages, and label the wiring connections to build the circuit.
(Hint: You will use 5 wires from the analog discovery?)

Pre-Lab - Question 2: Check

What is the minimum voltage the circuit can have? 0V

What is the maximum voltage the circuit can have? 5V

Lab – Procedure 1: For this week’s lab, you will watch the TA demonstrate the Check
procedures for the lab, follow along and proceed with the lab yourself. This lab should
be completed by yourself.

Draw the circuit diagram for the lab on a piece of paper, click the picture (Figure 1)
with your ID card (if you do not have your ID card, please write down your full name
below the circuit diagram) and paste it here:

Lab – Procedure 2: Watch the TA and Follow the procedures on the website to: Check
Follow how the angle sensor is setup. Connect your Analog Discovery or ADALM2000
to the sensor (using all 5 of the needed wires). Take a screenshot/picture (Figure 2) of
the setup with the wires visible so you can label them later. Paste the screenshot
here:

Lab –Procedure 3: Open up Waveforms/Scopy software. Create a new Power supply Check
and turn it on as a 5V source. Create a new Scope, unchecking channel 2 (blue), and
adjust the time and voltage range settings to get a good signal. If not, you may watch
the TA perform this during the lab section and follow accordingly.

- Take a screen shot (Figure 3) of the voltage vs time signal you obtained as you raised

and released the pendulum. (You can paste this into a Word doc)

- Describe the voltage (offset and range) settings you used to obtain your signal.
The settings we used to obtain our signals included the range and offset, our results
from the waveforms showing us the range from different degrees as well as the volts
between each angle.

- Describe the time settings (position and base) you used to obtain your signal.
The position of the pendulum was at 90 degrees when released swinging back and
forward until rest at the base of 0 degrees

Lab –Procedure 4a: Using the protractor, collect measurements on the voltage of Check
your sensor as you change the position using the following table (Assume hanging
down is 0 degrees):
θ, Degrees V, Volts
-80 1.43V
-60 1.62V
-40 1.82V
-20 2.16V
0 2.47V
20 2.74V
40 2.95V
60 3.37V
80 3.53V
Sketch your pendulum, looking at it, showing which direction is a positive angle

change, and which direction is a negative angle change:

Show this to the TA for a stamp.

Lab –Procedure 4b: Now, using MATLAB, you will plot the data (data obtained from Check
the lab (use your original data). For MATLAB steps it may be helpful to create a new
script file by typing: edit yourfilename.m in MATLAB. You can then add your
commands to it, save it, and then run it in MATLAB by typing: yourfilename If things
aren’t working perfectly when you do this, try removing the “hold on” command from
your file.

- Save your MATLAB graph (Figure 4) for the Angle vs Voltage data to your Word doc.

- Describe the variables and units for each of the x- and y- axes.
(Angle degrees(y))-80, -60, -40, -20, 0, 20, 40, 60, 80
(Voltage(x))1.43, 1.62, 1.82, 2.16, 2.47, 2.74, 2.95, 3.37, 3.53

- Record both of the calibration equations:

M=83.3
B=-200
Y=(83.3)x-(200)

Lab –Procedure 5: Now, follow Procedure 5 to capture some data of your angle Check
sensor. Create a new MATLAB file to process the data obtained from your own
recordings.

- Plot the Voltage vs Time (Figure 5) and save to Word.

- Plot the Angle vs Time (Figure 5) and save to Word.

Post- Lab – Step 1 Organize all of your Figures neatly in your Word document,
labeling Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, etc.

Post- Lab – Step 2 Take a picture of your bag of parts with your ID card. Even if you
do not have your USB instrument, you can assemble the angle sensor for your picture.
Include the picture in your report.

Post- Lab – Step 3 In a few sentences, answer the following sentences. You can also
answer them in your Word doc if you want to type/need more room.

- From procedure 4, compare the results from the two types of curve fit methods you
used (equation for a straight line vs polyfit).
The curve methods varied from equations the straight line graph showed a straight
line going up, showing the increasing angles over the amount of voltage going
through each angle.
The Polyfit graph showed the line going up and down as we swung the pendulum
going from 90 degrees until it stopped swinging at 0 degrees.

- Explain how you will use the calibration curve in Procedure 5.

We are able to use the calibration curve in procedure 5 through the swing pattern as
well as with the analog system that tracks the volts from varying degrees.

Post- Lab – Step 4 In a few sentences, answer the following sentences. You can also
answer them in your Word doc if you want to type/need more room.

- From procedure 5, Describe your Voltage vs Time pendulum dynamics graph.

Using the graph from procedure 5 we are able to identify the different volts at
different times by swinging it on the pendulum.

- Describe your Angle vs Time pendulum dynamics graph (i.e. how did you come up
with this graph.
Me and my partner came up with this graph through swinging the pendulum that
recorded voltages from different angles, this displayed a wave going up and down as
it was swinging.

Post- Lab – Step 5 Turn this sheet in to the TAs for grading. Attach a copy of the Word
doc with your Figures and answers.
